Key Findings

T-Mobile takes the 5G Download Speed award for the first time

For the first time, T-Mobile wins Opensignal's award for 5G Download Speed. Our T-Mobile users saw average 5G download speeds of 58.1 Mbps ahead of AT&T's score of 53.8 Mbps and Verizon on 47.4 Mbps. This represents the real-world 5G experience of users. Our T-Mobile users' average 5G Download Speed has increased from 49.2 Mbps in our last report helping them to snatch the award from Verizon now.

All three carriers see big improvements in 5G Availability

T-Mobile wins the 5G Availability award with a score of 30.1%, up from 22.5% six months ago. The other 5G carriers have also made impressive progress since our last report: the proportion of time our Verizon 5G users spent connected to 5G improved the most with a jump from the 0.4% seen in our last report to 9.5% and AT&T also saw an increase from 10.3% to 18.8%. The result is that our 5G users on all the U.S. carriers have been able to enjoy the superior 5G experience for more of the time.

The 5G experience is extremely competitive across states, except on 5G Availability

In 20 leading 5G states we analyzed, T-Mobile had a clean sweep winning all our state 5G Availability awards. Excluding availability, in 43% of state awards the honors were shared by two or more carriers, indicating a very close race. While it missed out on national 5G awards this time, AT&T came away with eight state awards and 33 joint wins. T-Mobile and Verizon matched their national successes at the state level. T-Mobile won the greatest number of state 5G Download and Upload Speed awards. Similarly, Verizon won the most state 5G Video Experience awards with six outright wins and 14 joint wins — AT&T was the main 5G Video Experience challenger to Verizon, jointly winning 14 states.

Verizon dominates 5G Video Experience, winning the inaugural award

It's a comprehensive set of wins for Verizon mobile video streaming on 5G. Not only does Verizon win the national award with a score of 64.9 on our one hundred point scale but Verizon also wins, or jointly wins, all of our U.S. state video awards. And, Verizon's 5G users also have the best overall video experience across all mobile technologies as Verizon wins the Video Experience – 5G Users award nationally and wins or joint wins in each state as well.

5G Upload speeds gain an uplift over 4G too, with T-Mobile winning the award

Sharing photos and video on social media or making video calls all benefit from a fast upload speed. In the first 5G Upload Speed award, T-Mobile wins with a score of 14.0 Mbps ahead of Verizon in second place with 11.9 Mbps, while AT&T is in third place with 8.0 Mbps.

5G download speeds over 70 Mbps were experienced on all three carriers, but in different states

The different maturity and geographic focus of each carrier's initial 5G roll out is clear from the different 5G Download Speed scores seen across states. The fastest 5G Download Speed across states on all three carriers was impressively over 70 Mbps. Our AT&T users experienced 5G Download Speed over 70 Mbps in Maryland and Washington, our Verizon 5G users saw such average 5G speeds in New York, while our T-Mobile users saw average 5G Download Speed of over 70 Mbps in four states: Alabama, Illinois, New York and New Jersey.

Introduction

The 5G roll out in the U.S. continues at a fast pace with numerous changes since our last look at the state of the nation in 5G six months ago. The arrival of the 5G iPhone has meant every major handset maker now includes 5G and all Americans upgrading to one of the latest flagship U.S. smartphone models will now receive 5G capability as standard.

The carriers have also moved quickly on their 5G offerings. Since Opensignal's has launched standalone 5G which no longer relies on 4G technology and has expanded the reach of its mid-band 5G service using 2.5 GHz spectrum acquired through the Sprint merger.

Verizon has added to its extremely fast mmWave-based 5G services — marketed as 5G Ultra Wideband (UWB) — with a nationwide 5G roll-out vastly increasing the reach of 5G. While AT&T has also started to use dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) like Verizon, but without as much fanfare, as it expands its 5G reach too.

As we start 2021, the carriers will look to use the newly acquired 5G spectrum to further increase the superiority of the 5G mobile experience over 4G. We saw the extent of that 5G superiority recently when we looked at how the 5G experience had changed in five leading 5G cities.

In this latest report on the U.S. mobile experience of 5G users we look at how the mobile video experience differs across carriers. Also, we quantify how the 5G experience varies across twenty leading U.S. states for the first time which reveals a vibrant and competitive market with significant differences across states. We have also published a companion report — USA Mobile Network Experience January 2021 — which analyzes the overall experience of all mobile users.

National Analysis

5G Availability

There has been a revolution in 5G Availability in just six months. Opensignal users on all three carriers have seen much greater time connected to an active 5G signal this time than in our previous report. Opensignal's 5G Availability compares the amount of time 5G users spend connected to 5G — the higher the percentage, the more time users on a network are actually connected to 5G.

Our T-Mobile users were connected to 5G almost one-third of the time (30.1%) which has jumped from an already impressive 22.5% last time. Opensignal's AT&T 5G users also saw a big increase rising from 10.3% to 18.8% now.

But our Verizon users saw the biggest leap as the impact of Verizon's nationwide 5G launch and use of dynamic spectrum sharing helped boost 5G Availability from 0.4% to reach 9.5% in this report. Notably, Verizon launched its nationwide offer mid-way through the 90 day data period used for this report and so the full impact of its move have likely not yet been felt.

5G Video Experience

Opensignal's 5G results represent the end-to-end experience of users. A faster speed test does not automatically mean a better video streaming experience because of the different mechanisms carriers use to manage different types of mobile data traffic, such as video, and other characteristics of the connection. Opensignal tested 5G Video Experience using real video streaming tests to the typical content delivery networks used to host popular media services and websites.

Verizon won Opensignal's first 5G Video Experience award with a score of 64.9 on our one hundred point scale. AT&T users had the second highest score with 62.5. Despite strong 5G speed results, T-Mobile placed last on 5G Video Experience with 57.8 indicating that speed alone is not sufficient to offer users a great experience across all the uses they may have for a mobile service.

Video Experience – 5G Users

When a user upgrades to a 5G-capable smartphone using an operator's 5G price plan, they will want to be able to experience the best 5G connections. Opensignal's 5G Video Experience award compares the part of their mobile experience where they are connected to 5G technology.

However, it is just as important to understand the overall video experience that a 5G user enjoys because they spend some of their time connected to 4G and, for now, a minority of time connected to a 5G service. This is what our Video Experience – 5G Users measures. It takes into account the average 3G and 4G Video Experience that 5G users see, as well as their average 5G Video Experience and the proportion of time that they spent connected to each type of network to reveal the overall video experience.

Verizon also wins the Video Experience – 5G Users award, with AT&T again in second place. But the margin between the three carriers is slightly closer than it is for the 5G Video Experience award.

5G Download Speed

Our T-Mobile users saw a big improvement in their average 5G download speeds in the last six months. The average real-world 5G Download Speed experienced by our users increased from 49.2 Mbps to 58.1 Mbps in this latest report. T-Mobile is benefitting from the mid-band spectrum holding that it acquired as part of the merger with Sprint. This 2.5GHz spectrum has more MHz of capacity than the 600 MHz it previously mainly used and much more than the lower frequency bands used by AT&T or Verizon. Opensignal's 5G results represent the end-to-end experience of users using a 5G connection.

However, not all U.S. carriers saw a dramatic improvement in 5G Download Speed. The average 5G Download Speed experienced by our users on AT&T fell from 60.8 Mbps to 53.8 Mbps and there was a similar fall on Verizon because of the launch of its nationwide 5G offering, which uses lower frequency bands than the mmWave technology Verizon had exclusively relied upon before October 2020.

Download Speed Experience – 5G Users

When we look at the overall download speed experience by 5G users — in other words those mobile users with both a 5G smartphone model and a 5G plan — we see a different story, although the same winner in T-Mobile.

Where last timeVerizon and AT&T tied for the Download Speed Experience – 5G Users award, this time T-Mobile snatches a win with the overall speed of T-Mobile 5G users increasing from 33.7 Mbps to 47.6 Mbps in this latest report.

The overall download speed of Verizon's 5G users has fractionally increased from 41.0 Mbps to 41.4 Mbps this time, although it is too small an increase to be significant, yet.

5G Upload Speed

The goal for 5G's designers is to improve all parts of the mobile experience. Sharing photos, videos, and other large files also benefits from 5G speeds. And, with users streaming more video in order to communicate with friends or colleagues now, the quality of users' upload connection is increasingly important.

In Opensignal's first award for 5G Upload Speed, T-Mobile wins with 14.0 Mbps with Verizon a close second place and 11.9 Mbps. AT&T users experienced 8.0 Mbps.

Upload Speed Experience – 5G Users

When we look at the overall upload speed experience by 5G users — those with both a 5G plan and the use of a smartphone with 5G capability — we see similar rankings but lower speeds.

T-Mobile again wins with an Upload Speed Experience – 5G Users score of 11.4 Mbps, followed by Verizon on 8.2 Mbps and AT&T on 5.6 Mbps. The slower 4G experience that 5G users have when they lack a 5G connection pulled down the overall 5G user scores by between 19% and 31%, depending on the carrier.

Regional Analysis

For the first time, Opensignal has analyzed the 5G experience across twenty leading 5G states to understand how the 5G experience varies across the nation.

T-Mobile won every state award for 5G Availability. Our T-Mobile users in the states of Illinois, Missouri, Oregon and Louisiana spent more than 35% of their time connected to 5G. By contrast, AT&T clocked up 5G Availability scores above 25% in both New Jersey and Maryland. Verizon scored above 11.5% in Washington state, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey.

5G Video Experience differed less by state than 5G Availability or 5G speed, but there continued to be very significant variation across carriers, and on the relative strength of each carrier by state. Verizon won outright six awards for 5G Video Experience by state and jointly won the remaining 14 awards. In every state we analyzed, Verizon either won or jointly won the 5G Video Experience award.

It's notable that the highest 5G Video Experience score seen by our T-Mobile users of 60.2 in New Jersey matched the lowest 5G Video Experience of our Verizon users in Alabama. Opensignal's AT&T users had their best 5G Video Experience in Maryland, Washington state, New York state and Illinois, with scores above 64.5.

The fastest average 5G Download Speed across states observed by our users on all three carriers was impressively over 70 Mbps. Our AT&T users experienced 5G Download Speed over 70 Mbps in Maryland and Washington state, our Verizon 5G users saw such average 5G speeds in New York, while our T-Mobile users saw average 5G Download Speed of over 70 Mbps in four states: Alabama, Illinois, New York state and New Jersey.

Our T-Mobile users in New York state and New Jersey saw the fastest 5G Upload Speeds, clocking in at (20.6 Mbps and 19.4 Mbps, respectively while our Verizon users saw a tie for their highest average 5G Upload Speed between New York state and Illinois. Our users on AT&T had their fastest sharing experience in Texas and California with average 5G Upload Speed of 10.6 Mbps and 9.9 Mbps, respectively. T-Mobile matched its national 5G Upload Speed award by either winning outright or jointly winning almost every state award for 5G Upload Speed missing out on only two of those we analyzed.

As the carriers continue to expand their 5G networks, launch 5G on more spectrum bands and so increase 5G capacity, we will see the state of the 5G nation change dramatically. The states where users see the best 5G experience today, may not be the ones with the highest quality 5G mobile experience in a few months' time.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
