The 2022 school year has begun, and I hope you all are off to a good start!  As teachers you have a tremendous impact on students lives. Taking good care of yourself is the foundation of being able to be there for your own family, students and co-workers; please take the time to focus on your health and well-being this year. 

To support teacher health, OEA Choice Trust is accepting applications for Employee Wellness programs.  Share the opportunity with your administrators to see if your school can support an employee wellness program.

Other exciting news for the new year include the release of the new National Consensus for School Health Education Standards as well as the revision work being done on our own Health and Physical Education Standards. A dedicated group of educators from around the state is busy with improving our standards, and the group welcomes your input on the standards and performance indicators.  Please send your comments to suzanne.hidde@ode.oregon.gov. You will also have the opportunity to review and comment on the draft standards in the beginning of January 2023.

ODE seeking participants for K-12 Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Advisory Group

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is seeking participants that reflect the diversity of the public K-12 student population for its K-12 Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Framework & Standards Advisory Group. This group will work with ODE to develop a K-12 SEL Framework and Standards for Oregon to be adopted by the State Board of Education by September 2023. The adopted SEL Framework and Standards will be implemented in Oregon schools starting in the fall of 2024.

National consensus

Release of National Consensus Health Education Standards - 3rd Edition

AUGUST 30, 2022 – ATLANTA, GEORGIA – The National Consensus for School Health Education, an initiative of six leading national health education organizations, is pleased to release the “National Health Education Standards – 3rd Edition – Model Guidance for School Curriculum and Instruction.” (www.schoolhealtheducation.org).

This resource is intended for state agencies, school districts, curriculum directors, university teacher preparation programs, and textbook and curriculum developers interested in quality school health education. It was prepared by an expert group of national school health education experts who have significant experience with standards development, curriculum development, classroom teaching, and university preparation programs, including experience with leading other successful national- and state-level standards development processes. The National Consensus encourages modifications to address local needs.

The National Consensus is committed to providing all materials it develops to the field at no charge and with open permission to use (with attribution). The 2022 Standards and other National Consensus development processes follow the Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession.

Return to School Oregon - Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Team

A brain injury, including concussion, can change the way a student behaves, moves, thinks, and learns. These changes can lead to challenges in a student’s ability to succeed at school. To find out the signs and symptoms of a concussion visit the Return to School website.

The more educators know about brain injury the better prepared they will be to support students with brain injury in their classroom. The https://returntoschool.org/ website was designed to provide materials, education, tools and support for educators, parents and community providers who care for students with brain injury.  ODE also has a Traumatic Brain Injury webpage with more information.

Join Active Schools and OPEN for Family PE Week!  Help your students’ families understand that physical education is about teaching, learning, and fun by participating in Family PE Week, October 3-7. It’s a win-win-win for students, parents, and PE teachers.

OEA Choice Trust - Employee Well-Being Grants

This grant opportunity is open to Oregon public school districts, education service districts, and community colleges. EEW Grant awards are a maximum of $100,000 over 5 years to support the planning and implementation, or expansion of existing, education employee well-being programs.

And although experts say that children ages 6 to 12 should get at least nine hours of sleep each day, it’s been unclear how less sleep might affect a child's brain.


'Digital self-harm' is on the rise among teens:  What parents can do to help

Digital self-harm is a behavior in which a person targets themselves online. This form of virtual self-bullying is especially common among adolescents. A new study led by Florida Atlantic University shows a significant association between digital self-harm and suicidal ideation among teens.
