Women's History Month

download

March is a month to celebrate all the accomplishments and contributions that women have made and continue to make in our world!

The National Women’s History Alliance designates a yearly theme for Women's History Month. The 2022 theme is "Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope." This theme is "both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history." Check out the various photo galleries and facts for women leaders, women in sports, women in the arts, and women in science.

I hope you will be able to participate in some of the PD opportunities and utilize the resources listed in this newsletter.  As always, please reach out if I can be of assistance, and to give your input on newsletter ideas, articles, or highlights that you would like to see.

Call for Youth Leaders Ages 15 - 19: Application for the Oregon Health Authority Youth Advisory Council

OHA

Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is accepting applications from youth and youth-serving community-based organizations to serve on and/or support a statewide youth advisory council (YAC). With the overarching goal of health equity, this youth council will make decisions on how to invest $1 million to help youth, schools and communities recover from COVID-19 and its many effects.

OHA will appoint 20 youth age 15 to 19 to serve on a YAC from March 2022 to June 2023 (15 months). OHA is committed to seeking participation on this council from youth from communities most affected by COVID-19 and health inequities, including:

  • Youth of color
  • Youth from Tribal communities
  • Youth with disabilities
  • Youth experiencing housing instability
  • Youth who are LGTBQIA2S+

The council will work to define values, identify needs, and explore what it means for schools and communities to recover from COVID-19. The council will then assist OHA staff in making investments in projects and programs that address the values and needs identified by the YAC.

All youth members will be eligible for a stipend of $45 per hour for their time participating in council activities.

Funding Opportunity for Community-Based Organizations

OHA is also offering $10,000 mini-grants for CBOs to engage with and support the council through individual youth support, mentorship, and/or additional engagement activities (such as focus groups) with the youth the CBO serves.

To learn more and to apply, please visit OHA’s home page for the Statewide Youth Health Council and/or email adolescent.program@state.or.us with any questions. Applications for youth council members and for CBO support are due March 31.

Please share widely!  We appreciate your service to Oregon Youth and look forward to your application.

Other Resources

gymnastics

OPEN Physical Education Curriculum Logo

This module includes activities that are designed to develop movement concepts and body control. Educational gymnastics is not the same type of gymnastics seen on TV during the Olympics. It focuses on teaching introductory skills and concepts in a safe way related to traveling, balancing, rolling, and the transfer of weight. High level skills that require advanced spotting techniques (e.g., back handsprings) are not included as a part of this educational gymnastics module. Our focus remains on safe movement exploration versus competitive gymnastics proficiency. Activities in this module provide fun challenges to students of all ability levels with safety always the priority.

Multicultural Games for Physical Education - Article by Matthew Fencl

The physical education (PE) classroom may arguably be the most opportune location within a school to incorporate multicultural instruction into curricula. Children are naturally inquisitive and often enjoy both socializing and learning through physical activity (Murphy & Maeda, 2012) . Physical activity therefore is an excellent medium through which students can experience, learn and value sports and games from different cultures (McGehee & Reeskie, 1999) .  Check out this free article in Strategies newsletter from SHAPE AMERICA.
