AP US History From Home

Let's Prepare For Our AP Exam Together

End of the School Year! image
Congratulations, you made it through the craziest high school/life experience I have ever witnessed (and you're doing it at 16/17 y/o).  All final grades posted today at 4:00PM.  If you have any questions or concerns over the break don't hesitate to email or request a Zoom meeting.

I know I don't have to tell you we are in the middle of history. You will talk about events that you're currently living and watching unfold with your grandkids. It's for that reason (and because it's your civic obligation as a member of our society) that I implore you to spend time listening to the issues and perspectives being voiced. Use the analytical tools you've been polishing in class (especially when establishing the credibility of a source) to truly reflect over our period of history. But most important, discuss these issues, your thoughts, and your perspectives with others. History has taught us that there are no easy answers with quick fixes. We cannot be expected to solve these issues, or even fully understand the situation, as individuals, but together, with deep conversation and multiple perspectives, the process can at least begin.

If you're interested in the origins of the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a succinct and credible timeline.

Well, we've made it to the final week of the school year.  I/m sorry the year is ending the way it is... fortunately you're all juniors and can come visit next year (and I'm counting on it)!  Remember, email any questions or concerns and I'll set up a meeting.  All teachers will finalize 4th quarter grades by Thursday, June 4th, at 4:00PM.  Be safe this summer and pay attention to what's happening around you.  This is not only history in the making, it's shaping the country in which we live.

For anyone signed up for the late AP US History exam:

-  Remember your E Ticket can be found in 1) the email you used to set up your College Board account, and 2) your AP Classroom (which you can access by going to myap.collegeboard.org

-  Exam Date: Wednesday, June 3rd at 9:00AM (Please sign in at 8:30 to begin the process).

Good Luck!  You've got this!

AP Testing has begun!  Remember, our exam is this Friday, May 15th at 11:00 am (don't forget you will need to log in at 10:30 am).  I realize many of you are scheduled to take multiple exams, and consequently, may feel more pressure or be short on time this week.  As a result, there will not be a scheduled Zoom lesson this week.  Instead, please continue to individually email me times you're available to go over your practice DBQ and I will set up a private zoom session.  As always, I'm available for any questions/concerns via email, or during an open zoom session Wednesday at 2:30 (see the link below).

  • UPDATE FROM TUESDAY 5/5/20.  Hi everybody.  Today I offered a zoom session that focused on breaking down the DBQ rubric.  I encouraged zoom participates to complete the practice DBQ (which can be found under "Documents; Practice Exam & Modified 2020 Rubric") before tomorrow's (5/6/20) zoom session so we could go over the exam step by step.  That said, I've decided to postpone going over the exam with the hope that waiting will allow more student the opportunity to complete the practice exam.  I will still be available for any question and/or clarifications during our scheduled zoom session.  Also, I encourage all students to email me their DBQ response so I can provide individual consults and scores.

The countdown has begun!  Remember, your exam is Friday, May 15th @11:00 am (though you will login and begin the pre-exam portion at 10:30 am).  You should have received an email from CollegeBoard sometime today that listed all exams you are scheduled to take... as well as, additional information and links about the process.  If you haven't already done so, please make sure to try the "exam day demo" in order to assure yourself there will be no issues logging in the day of the exam.  https://ap2020examdemo.collegeboard.org/

This week we will be meeting twice:

Hi everyone.  I have a couple of updates:

1) I'll still be sending a zoom link for this Wednesday (4/29) at 2:30 -- but we won't be having our traditional class. Instead, I'll be available for any questions you may have. The reason for this is because I will be joining a webinar put on by College Board Wednesday evening that will go over the step by step of our exam day.

2) Thursday (4/30) at 2:30 we will have our Zoom "class." This will allow me to go over all the testing info I receive Wednesday. Please make every effort to join.

Updates 4/20/20 (Week 6) image
Updates 4/13/20 (Week 5) image
As many of you have heard, FUSD issued the new grading guidelines last Thursday, April 9th. As a result of some of the language of the new guidelines I need to make changes to what I presented Wednesday, the 8th.

To see Superintendent Nelson's message visit FUSD's website: https://www.fresnounified.org/

Opportunities to improve your grade include the following:

1) Make-up Opportunities:

You may choose to make-up or resubmit any of the textbook homework assignments from the 3rd quarter. That includes chapters 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. Each of these assignments is worth 6 points. If completed and submitted by Tuesday, May 26th I will replace any existing score with the score earned on the make-up assignment.

2) Extra-Credit Opportunities:

In addition to the make-up assignments you may compete any or all of the extra-credit assignments below. If all of these points are earned your grade will raise by 8%. Remember, this is in addition to any points you may earn from submitting make-up assignments.  Unlike the make-up assignments, all extra-credit assignments must be submitted by Thursday, May 14th (the day before your AP Exam).

  • 3 pts: Chapter 23 Reading Guide or Chapter 23 Key Vocabulary Terms
  • 3 pts: Chapter 24 Reading Guide
  • 3 pts: Primary Document: FDR's Four Freedoms Address
  • 3 pts: Primary Document: WWII Internet Investigation
Note: All of these opportunities can be found under "Documents" at the bottom of the page.

 Major Updates 4/3/20 image
So much to talk about...

Class Updates:

  • I will be able to give you credit for enrichment (optional) opportunities!
  • No student's 3rd quarter grade can go down, but students will be given the opportunity to improve their current grade by 10% through the completion of enrichment assignments. As of now, the only enrichment assignment that will contribute to this 10% is the Chapter 24 reading guide (more to come each week).   *This has been changed.  Please see "Update 4/13/20.
  • I will be offering a Zoom class session every Wednesday from 3:00 to 3:45 PM (and likely more as the number of participating students grows).  The times have changed.  We will now meet Wednesdays at 2:30.

AP Exam Update:

  • Your exam will be on Friday, May 15th at 11:00 AM. The exam will consist of a 5 document DBQ. Students will have 45 minutes to complete the exam -- and then 5 minutes to upload the document to College Board (more specifics to follow).
    • We will begin our next Zoom session with an overview of the revised exam.
    • If you would like to review these topics independently, see the link below & click on AP US History.
    https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/educators/taking-the-exams/ap-exam-schedule

Will the College Board provide any tutorial/review opportunities?

Yes.  Beginning on Wednesday, March 25, students and teachers can attend free, live AP review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. These mobile-friendly classes are:
  • Designed to be used alongside work that may be given by schools.
  • Will be recorded and available on-demand so teachers and students can access them any time.
  • Not dependent on current AP teachers continuing instruction. We know many AP teachers now face challenges that would make that impossible.
  • Will focus on reviewing the skills and concepts from the first 75% of the course. There will also be some supplementary lessons including topics from the final 25% of the course.

Click here for access: https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/coronavirus-updates#free-ap-classes

Will I still have an opportunity to take the AP US exam?

Yes.  For the 2019–20 exam administration only, students can take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home. The Exam will consist of a 5 document DBQ given at 11:00AM on Friday, May 15th.

When will I receive more details about how and when to take the AP exam from home?

Students can choose from two different test dates, these dates will be released by April 3. I will send more info out as soon as this information is available.

Are the assignments Mr. Allen posts required?

No.  Any assignments I post are optional and intended to 1) provide you with educational opportunities during this unprecedented time & 2) better prepare you for the up-coming AP exam.  That said, there will be multiple opportunities for you to improve your 3rd quarter grade.

What time periods will be covered on the revised exam?

The following periods will be covered on the exam:

 Unit 1: Period 1: 1491–1607
 Unit 2: Period 2: 1607–1754
 Unit 3: Period 3: 1754–1800
 Unit 4: Period 4: 1800–1848
 Unit 5: Period 5: 1844–1877
 Unit 6: Period 6: 1865–1898
 Unit 7: Period 7: 1890–1945

The following periods will not be covered on the exam:

 Unit 8: Period 8: 1945–1980
 Unit 9: Period 9: 1980–Present

Has College Board released the revised rubric for our exam?

Yes.  The complete rubric can be found at the following link.
