On March 13th, we had the honor of hosting highly talented students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (#HBCUs) and local universities through the #BioSTL Pathways program. As part of their #ExploreSTL retreat, the day at #Bayer was full of engaging activities, including a site visit tour, greenhouse experience, group lunch, personal story of career path by Ruth Wagner and speed mentoring round tables. Our mentors shared their industry experience, career insights, and tailored advice with the young professionals during the interactions. Thanks again for our wonderful Bayer mentors and leaders: Wei-Ting Liao, Lisa Kanizay, Matt Goddard, Jenn To, Meredith Sigman, Richard Lawrence, Huiyu (Joy) Wang, Phil Taylor, Tommi White, Betsabe Mantilla Perez, Charles Dietrich, and Tim Wertin! This visit is part of #B4U's steadfast dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (#DEI) in the biotech and life science industry, and to fostering and empowering these students with knowledge, resources, and connections! Tomorrow, I will have the huge honor of speaking to the incoming cohort of mentees in The Bayer University Mentoring Program's North America Chapter, as they kick off their #mentoring experience. Sourced from around the country, these individuals represent the best of the best of future talent for our industry. I'm fortunate to have had (and still have!) many amazing mentors during my career, both formally and informally. I've also had the privilege to mentor individuals and see amazing growth and transformation. That said, I know I still have a lot to learn about both mentoring and being mentored. As I get ready for tomorrow's event: what's your favorite tip, trick, idea, approach when it comes to mentoring? My thanks to Tim Wertin, Tommi White and the whole B4U team for the invitation!

#B4U2023 Wraps Up: A Year of Growth, Inspiring Connections! Our year-long B4U mentoring program just concluded with a virtual celebration, and it was AMAZING! Over 140 participated in the closing ceremony. Within the NA chapter, 135 grad students & postdocs from 20+ universities/institutions were paired with Bayer Crop Science mentors for a transformative journey which includes: 1:1 mentoring sessions, Webinars, Clifton Strengths Assessment, Coffee chats & site tours. The hour-long ceremony included: Chapter highlights: Each university showcased its activities. Powerful testimonials: students and alumni shared their impactful stories. ️ Keynote inspiration: Erin Jones spoke on the enduring value of mentoring relationships. A HUGE thank you to our amazing Bayer mentors! Your dedication helped shape the next generation of scientific leaders. And to our fantastic mentees, congratulations! BioSTL's Pathways Program attracts underrepresented scholars in life sciences-focused majors from HBCUs and universities with high minority representation. The program offers career paths within the three pillars of BioSTL and beyond, establishing St. Louis as a place to plant roots and build a legacy. The 2022-23 pilot program was a great success! Of the 12 scholars who attended a 3-day retreat, 9 accepted summer internship offers, 2 received full-time permanent offers, and 1 returned for a fall internship. Happy new year! This week, #B4U were privileged to host an insightful and impactful webinar on the crucial topic of Mental Wellness. We were joined by an incredible line-up of speakers, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to the table. First, Abigail Stack bravely shared her personal journey with mental health, reminded us of the power of gratitude in life. Her story was a testament to resilience and the strength of the human spirit, inspiring us to embrace the ups and downs of life with gratitude. Next, we had Jaime Otzenberger, an expert in workplace wellness, provided valuable insights on maintaining mental health in the professional environment. Her discussion underscored the importance of creating supportive and understanding workplaces, where mental health is not just acknowledged, but actively nurtured. Lastly, Kun He shared his transformative journey on building mental health resilience. His experiences highlighted the importance of self-care, perseverance, and the role of community support in our mental health journey. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our speakers for their openness and for shedding light on these pivotal issues. Some highlights from our newsletter; On November 14th, a group of B4U mentees from VT and NCSU had a chance to experience an on-site tour. The day was filled with opportunities to delve into the world of crop science, explore the latest advancements in the field, and network with industry professionals. The tour began with a guided exploration of Cotton Incorporated facility in NC (with the help of Dr. Sally Taylor), where students gained insights into the various processes involved in cotton production, from research and development to commercialization. After a nourishing lunch, the students went on a tour of the new Plant Sciences Initiative facility at NC State University (guided by Dr. Kathleen Pitcher) and later engaged in a lively networking session with industry experts. They exchanged ideas, sought guidance, and explored potential career paths.
