Surprise, Miracle Legion are playing live again!

Way back in 2017 they announced at a show in San Francisco that it would be their last performance. They told a lie. This June they’ll be doing a short east coast tour in support of the re-release of their classic album Surprise Surprise Surprise. The run starts in New Hampshire and ends at Wilco’s Solid Sound Fest at MASS MoCA. The set list will likely lean heavy on the Surprise record which is being re-released on vinyl June 1. The record has been remastered and re-mixed by Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Throwing Muses).

Miracle Legion formed in the the 80’s and became something of a cult hit following acclaim from the likes of NME and Melody Maker and the release of their debut album on Rough Trade Records. They released several albums and toured the US and Europe. They split in the 90’s and did other things.

Singer Mark Mulcahy would go on to form Polaris and make solo records and Scott Boutier and Dave MaCaffrey joined up with Frank Black and became The Catholics.

Tickets for all shows are available at the venues and all the usual ticket services.

The Tinsler Vol 1

  1. My Love Mine All Mine (Mitski)

  2. Jonny (Faye Webster)

  3. Anything (Adrianne Lenker)

The last few year I’ve been driving a lot and listening to loads of music. All the way back to daily Hamilton, TS (original), Dua Lipa (and Da Baby), Sprach Zarathustra, too much Fleetwood Mac and just enough Elton John. All that stuff stayed in the mix, but pretty soon it was Phoebe Bridgers every other song. Then Lucy Dacus, Adrianne Lenker, Mitski, Clairo, Beabadoobee and Laufey. A pretty steady ear diet of lady singers and writers is all they ever played. Solitary confinement where no man can be heard. Maybe The Strokes, but I was surrounded by all this wonderful music, and even though I made them shut it off sometimes and put on Toys in the Attic, I love so much of it. When boygenius started rolling I hitchhiked along and was amazed.

So this little record is some kind of summary tribute to the time spent listening and learning and crying and laughing. I’m happy to know there’s still reams and buckets and pontoon boats full of great music being made by people I never heard of. It was easy covering these songs cause they’re burned into my brain and they remind of some beautiful drives to no place in particular.
