MOMENT YEARS IN THE MAKING. BOB: FOR GENERATIONS, PITTSBURGHERS HAVE KNOWN THIS BUILDING AS THE PRODUCE TERMINAL. NOW THE STRIP DISTRICT TERMINAL AND 1600 SMALLMAN, THE WAREHOUSE ACROSS THE STREET, HAVE MARKED A BEGINNING, A GROUNDBREAKING TO LOOK TO THE STRIP DISTRICT’S FUTURE. >> I REMEMBER COMING TO THIS BUILDING WHEN I WAS LIKE EIGHT YEARS OLD WITH MY GRANDFATHER TO BUY GRAPES. YOU KNOW, IF YOU’RE ITALIAN AND FROM WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, THIS BUILDING CONNECTS TO YOU DIRECTLY. BOB: MAYOR BILL PEDUTO AND DEVELOPER DAN MCCAFFERY DID A WALKING TOUR OF THE PROJECTS BEFORE THE GROUNDBREAKING. THE TERMINAL BUILDING IS SEVERAL BLOCKS LONG AND WAS BULT IN 1926. IT’S BEING TURNED INTO LEASED RESTAURANTS, RETAIL SHOPS, AND A FOOD CENTERED MARKET WITH 277 PARKING SPACES AND INCREASED ACCESS THROUGH THE BUILDING TO THE RIVER. >> WE’RE RESPECTING HER. WE ARE NOT TEARING IT DOWN. WE’RE GOING TO POLISH HER UP. WE’RE GOING TO GIVE HER A BRAND NEW USE. AND SHE -- THIS BUILDING WILL BE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE REGENERATION AND REJUVENATION ALL ALONG THE ALLEGHENY RIVER. BOB: 1600 SMALLMAN WILL HOST MORE THAN 120,000 SQUARE FEET OF RETAIL ND OFFICE SPACE. IT TOO HAS SEEN OTHER INCARNATIONS OVER THE YEARS. >> WHEN I MOVED HERE FIVE YEARS AGO, I WOULD SAY, THE 1600 SMALLMAN PROJECT. PEOPLE WOULD SAY, YOU MEAN ROSEBUD OR METROPOL, RIGHT? SO I THINK WE WILL BRING BACK SOME OF THAT ENTERTAINMENT ASPECT. BOB: THIS GROUNDBREAKING MARKS THE START OF A RE-DEVELOPMENT THAT HAS BEEN YEARS IN COMING. 1600 SMALLMAN WILL BE COMPLETE IN JUNE OF NEXT YEAR. THE REBORN STRIP DISTRICT TERMINAL IS TO BE COMPLETED IN AUGUST 2020. >> WE HAVE TREMENDOUS RESPONSE FROM THE LOCAL PEOPLE. TREMENDOUS INTEREST. I WANT TO BE THERE, WHAT’S IT LIKE, WHAT’S GOING ON?

Groundbreaking looks to future for Strip District Terminal and 1600 Smallman development projects
For decades, Pittsburghers had known the property in the 1600 to 2100 blocks of Smallman Street as a produce terminal but now the Strip District Terminal and the former warehouse known as 1600 Smallman have marked a new beginning with a groundbreaking Tuesday that is looking to the Strip District's future.See how the Strip District will change in the video player above."I remember coming to this building when I was 8 years old with my grandfather to buy grapes," Mayor Bill Peduto said. "If you're Italian and from western Pennsylvania, this building connects to you directly."Its history is not only a part of the Strip District -- it's a history that's a part of western Pennsylvania, and it's going to see another 100 years."Peduto and developer Dan McCaffery, the CEO of McCaffery Interests, did a walking tour of the projects before the groundbreaking was held Tuesday afternoon.The terminal building is several blocks long and was built in 1926. It's being turned into leased space for retail shops, restaurants and a food-centered market, plus 277 parking spaces and increased access through the building to the river."We have a tremendous response from the local people. Tremendous interest: 'I want to be there,' 'What's it like?,' What's going on?' I think we're on the way to meeting everyone's objective of this being and saying 'Pittsburgh,'" McCafferey said."We're respecting her. We're not tearing her down," Peduto said. "We're going to polish her up, we're going to give her a brand new use, and this building will be the lifeblood of the regeneration and rejuvenation all along the Allegheny River," Peduto said.1600 Smallman will host more than 120,000 square feet of retail and office space."When I moved here five years ago, and I would say 'the 1600 Smallman project,' people would say, 'You mean Rosebud or Metropol, right?' So, I think we will bring back some of that entertainment aspect," said Pamela Austin, a senior project manager with McCaffery Interests.1600 Smallman is scheduled to be complete in June 2020, followed by the reborn Strip District Terminal in August.
