Crowd gathers for FAU's annual pumpkin drop and physics carnival
JUST IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. NEW HERE AT NOON FOR ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY IS BRINGING THE WEIRD SCIENCE TO HALLOWEEN THIS YEAR IN ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA. WAS THERE TODAY WHEN THEY LAUNCHED PUMPKINS OFF THE ROOF ON THE SPIRIT OF PHYSICIST. WELL, IF YOU’D LIKE TO SEE PUMPKINS FALL OUT OF THE SKY. TODAY WAS THE DAY TO BE AT FSU AS THEY OFFICIALLY RESTART THEIR ANNUAL PUMPKIN DROP AND PHYSICS CARNIVAL. AND AS EACH PUMPKIN SPLATTERED THIS MORNING THAT THEY USE FOR STORY SCIENCE BUILDING, THE CROWDS WENT WILD. THE ANNUAL PUMPKIN DROP SAW THE U.S. PRESIDENT AND DIFFERENT PROFESSORS DROP PUMPKINS, LARGE AND SMALL, EVEN SOME TIED TOGETHER. ALL IN THE NAME OF PHYSICS AND THE GOAL WAS TO DEMONSTRATE COMMON PHYSICS PRINCIPLES SUCH AS CONSTANT ACCELERATION OF GRAVITY, TERMINAL VELOCITY AND NEWTON’S LAWS. PROFESSORS I TALKED TO SAY IT’S A GREAT WAY TO GET KIDS INVOLVED WITH LEARNING SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT AND FAMOUS EXPERIMENTS. WE CONSIDER THIS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE THAT PHYSICS CAN BE FUN, THAT IT DOESN’T ALWAYS SERIOUS STUFF. AND OF COURSE, WHAT’S MORE FUNDAMENTAL THAN THE LAWS OF MOTION? THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST TIME THE PUMPKIN DROP HAS BEEN BACK ON CAMPUS SINCE THE START OF THE PANDEMIC. PROFESSORS I TALKED TO SAY THEY’RE GLAD TO SEE A LONG STANDING TRADITION RETURN TO CAMPUS IN BO
