House lawmakers sent a letter to U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp demanding answers on an ammo and firearm seizure he authorized in the days leading up to 2017’s Hurricane Irma.
House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop, R-Utah, and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., wrote to Mapp seeking answers to questions they had regarding his executive order authorizing the seizure, which the lawmakers note is “still in effect today.”
The order allows the adjutant general to “seize arms, ammunition explosives, and incendiary material” and effectively authorizes the “National Guard to seize lawfully owned firearms from citizens, in clear violation of their constitutional rights.”
Bishop appeared on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Wednesday to explain the “clarification” the chairmen hope to seek.
The letter sets a deadline of 5:00 pm on Aug. 1, 2018, for Mapp to provide the following information:
