The Atlanta Jewish Foundation, a part of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, had a record year for grants, distributing nearly $55 million to over a thousand organizations, including Grady Health Foundation, Boulder Crest Foundation and the Holocaust Survivors Support Fund.

On this edition of “Closer Look,” Jori Mendel, Chief Foundation Officer of Atlanta Jewish Foundation, discussed the significance of these donations, as well as the eagerness of donors in helping to provide financial assistance and awareness to a diverse group of organizations throughout metro Atlanta and elsewhere.

“A bulk of our money is with donor-advised funds. We work with them directly, or their professional wealth advisor, and we find out what they are interested in,” said Mendel. “You can’t go around this city and not notice affordable housing, the refugee crisis … we have all of these issues continually hitting us, and people are turning to us and saying, ‘maybe I didn’t give to these causes before, but help me get educated.'”

Over 1,300 organizations, about 20% being non-Jewish organizations, received grants ranging from a couple of hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“It’s interesting when you look at the ones who are being newly funded and figure out, ‘how can we further support those organizations who need more help and might not be as well known,'” said Mendel. “That is part of what our job is as well. (Nonprofit organizations) all matter, and they all have a role to play.”
