We do so by analyzing scientific research and clinical evidence, gathering new evidence through data science and citizen science, and recommending to individuals optimal combinations of teas, tinctures, and powders that can be used to achieve each individual's mental health goals. We conduct this research with the goal of allowing people to make informed decisions about their health and to increase access to healthy stress-coping alternatives. These healthy coping mechanisms can reduce reliance on harmful self-medication practices such as alcohol abuse or behavior likely to lead to opioid addiction. Value Proposition: Tinctures, teas and powders from herbal medicine combinations can represent better risk/reward ratios Through citizen science and data science over time we have the aspirational goal to meet and exceed evidence parity with regards to evidence of effectiveness for herbal medicines for stress & anxiety compared with pharmaceuticals. That mission is attractive for people to participate in as its an opportunity for global collaboration to create increasingly usable natural medicine for stress and anxiety. Each person can go upstream of their mental health challenges and adopt healthier coping mechanisms. • UX Writing Team Member

If you’re fluent in written English and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for someone to join our UX Writing team to help streamline and improve our written words, content strategy, and information architecture across multiple products. Please fill in this form if you'd like to help out! https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Note that the form includes a small design challenge as part of the application (see the last question). Note: To join the team, you will need to have an Android device. Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Even before COVID-19, students around the world were facing difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, lack of teacher training, and more. However, with COVID-19 forcing everyone to stay quarantined in their own homes, students now more than ever need access to free, quality education to ensure that they can continue to learn even if they cannot attend school. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. And, unfortunately, even those students who are in school may not receive the effective education they need. On Oppia’s website and Android beta app, our community of volunteers has created a series of mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with students, including in a randomized controlled trial. However, we have also identified some areas with the website where new learners get confused, as well as opportunities to improve the user experience on both platforms from an onboarding and navigation perspective. We are in the process of launching an effort to rewrite and streamline the learner and teacher user experiences from a writing-first perspective, in order to make it more cogent and unified. This is particularly important for first-time users, or learners with limited exposure to technology-based education. As a UX Writing volunteer, you would be able to help with this initiative! Why Oppia is an Organization You Want to Work With Oppia has served over 2,000,000 users. Oppia focuses on effectiveness, and conducts rigorous user testing and RCTs to validate the lessons we offer. Learners using Oppia’s lessons have seen gains of 50+% from pre-test to post-test. Oppia's contributors actively help to provide students around the world with basic education. Please see https://medium.com/@ebelubhuhiose/86b97283edf4 and https://medium.com/@ojobusayo99/6e783aaddb74 for examples of our current work. Oppia has a community of hundreds of passionate volunteers from across the globe, so our meetings are held online at flexible times. What Our UX Writing Team contributes (but is not limited to) Write clear and concise content across multiple aspects of the product (including, but not limited to, labels and navigational elements, buttons, tutorials, and notifications). Work with other UX writers to maintain and evolve voice and tone for the content style guide, which aims to help students and teachers feel welcome and supported when using Oppia’s platform and lessons. Work from a global-first perspective, collaborating with the translations and partnerships teams to use language that internationalizes well. You'll also get to work with a product team of designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers from all around the world! There will be opportunities to share your work with them, receive feedback, and contribute to the team through mentoring, onboarding or recruiting. If you'd like to help out, please fill in our form: https://forms.gle/Q8NwkNm8BZNUzwet7 . Thanks!

  • Are you a persuasive storyteller? Help Oppia secure grants to support free education

If you’re interested in grantwriting and storytelling for impact, with the aim of helping underserved children gain access to education, this is the volunteer role for you! Oppia is looking for passionate individuals to join our Grants and Fundraising Team to help secure the financial sustainability of the organization and enable Oppia to continue providing free educational services for underserved learners around the world who are unable to afford them. To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/5hwbq9c6AUYdzFqh7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. We do this through the creation and maintenance of our free-to-use platform, Oppia (https://www.oppia.org), the coordination of our passionate contributors, and the development of critical partnerships with NGOs in the communities we aim to serve. Where You Fit In Millions of children are not receiving the education they deserve. Of the 61 million children worldwide who cannot attend primary school, 17 million will never step foot into a school if trends continue. In the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education - making it even more difficult than before for many students to get the education they need to succeed. The learners we serve are typically from low-income families which cannot afford to pay for education; in some cases, the parents may not even have had the opportunity to attend school. Thus, to maintain and improve the services that we offer to them, it is important to source funding that allows us to cover the cost of offering these services. We generally aim to fund operating expenses through individual donations, but there are several major projects we are undertaking (such as core improvements to the website and Android app based on feedback from learners and volunteers) that will require grant funding in order to succeed. We are currently seeking strong writers who can help with grant and funding applications. • Marketing and social media for daily news website focused on helping the world

We are looking for an individual with a mind for marketing to join our team to help make more people become aware of our great nonprofit website. Our organization focuses on news about making the world a better place, particularly news related to topics such as global poverty, philanthropy, climate change, voluntarism and human rights. All volunteering is via the computer -- you can be anywhere in the world. The marketing volunteer usually does a mix of the following: 1) Research potential nonprofits that would be a good match for our website. Nearly all of our news is oriented towards making the world a better place, and that's also the mission of most nonprofits We particularly focus on things like global poverty, human rights, democracy, climate change and fighting modern-day slavery. So people who work at and donate to nonprofits that focus on those topic areas are an ideal audience for our news website. Therefore, we want to find those nonprofits and reach out to them. 2) The second main area is doing the outreach to the nonprofits and asking them if they can do either or both of : a) let their team members know about us. and b) let their supporters know about us in their newsletters or social media pages. In the big picture, if their supporters learn more about these topics, they will be better and more committed long-term supporters. So it's to their benefit if their supporters read our articles. It's a win-win for them and for us. We will primarily contact them via email and their social media accounts. 3) Volunteers also research potential media outlets and blogs to cover our site, send out our press releases, and keep track of coverage of our site that has occurred. The volunteer also helps promote the website by updating our Facebook, Twitter and other social media pages, attracting new followers, and interacting with our existing followers. 4) We are also creating many exciting new websites that you could be involved in marketing. They fall into two broad categories: A) a group of innovative websites to provide other nonprofits (and their supporters) with unique tools they can use to raise money for their causes. This link below gives an overview: click the "See More" buttons at the end of the sections. In the future, each logo will go to a unique website focused on that fundraising tool. About half of the logos are already linked to early drafts of the sites: http://maximumgood.org/ A few examples are: https://volunteerathon.herokuapp.com/ http://giveitup.net/ http://loseathon.org/ This is a sample of how a person's fundraising page will look - the format will be the same at most sites, but each will have a unique logo, activity and color scheme: http://loseathon.org/fundraiser We've ported the entire IRS database of 1 million nonprofits to our website, so all 1 million nonprofits will automatically have pages at all of the fundraising websites. E.g. - this is how a nonprofit profile will look http://loseathon.org/nonprofit/ B) new projects to fight global poverty, slavery and climate change. You can see the logos of many of them at these links. In the future clicking on each logo will go to a unique website: http://fortheearth.org/ There are other climate change websites we're creating and the best ones are not up there yet. http://fortheslaves.org/ One of the anti-slavery websites is a modern-day equivalent of the Underground Railroad. You can see the video we made for it and a draft of the website here - when we launch, it will be at .org - http://virtualrailroad.info No marketing experience is required, but you must be organized, pay attention to detail and be good at communicating. The marketing position is a minimum of seven hours per week for a minimum of five months. We tend to give preference to applicants who can do a sizable number of hours. You will be doing real stuff that directly brings our website to more people and supports our nonprofit's mission to help the world. You will also gain valuable experience that will build your skills and look great on a resume. Some of our volunteers have gone on to work at full-time marketing jobs for companies such as Reply.com and Bonfire Marketing. Two of our volunteers started their own non-profit organization after eight months of volunteering with us. To view our front page, visit - http://dailysource.org/ To read more about us, view the links here - http://dailysource.org/about/site If you apply for a position, you should view your commitment to it the same as if it were a paid position. We treat volunteers like normal staff and rely on them like staff. Our site is 99% volunteer run and we all depend on each other to make it a success. Please do not apply if you are viewing this opportunity as "just a volunteer position" and would treat it as less important than paid positions or other commitments you have. If you are in school, volunteering with us can function as an internship. Interns can usually receive credit with their school for their internships. If you're interested in volunteering, please email us at volunteer@dailysource.org and let us know: * How many hours per week and how many months can you do? We tend to give preference to people who can do more hours. * A description of your past work/volunteer experience and education, or a resume or a link to a LinkedIn profile. You can also apply directly through this website by clicking the button for that, and giving us the same information. Sometimes emails sent through this volunteer website are routed to spam folders, so we recommend you check your spam folder during the coming weeks in case our reply to you ends up there. We look forward to doing great work together to make the world better with you.

  • Make education accessible. Become a Hindi translator!

If you’re fluent in spoken and written Hindi and passionate about eradicating education inequality, keep reading! Oppia is looking for a translator to assist our team with translating our online story-based lessons from English to Hindi . To get started, please fill in this form: https://forms.gle/HTCWBRixXo9gJj2o7 Who We Are The Oppia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission to provide high quality education to all. Students around the world face difficulties accessing quality education due to conflict, discrimination, and lack of teacher training - and, in the wake of COVID-19, millions more children are also seeing interruptions in their daily lives, stability, and education, which makes it even more difficult for them to get the education they need to succeed. Our community of volunteers has created a series of novel and engaging story-based mathematics lessons that have proved highly engaging and effective with English-speaking students, including in a randomized controlled trial. We now want to expand the reach of these lessons by translating them into Hindi , in order to make them as accessible as possible to learners who have Hindi as a native language. This language is a particular focus for Oppia because we already have evidence that students who speak it would like to use our lessons, but have difficulty doing so because of the lack of translations. We are therefore seeking fluent or native-level speakers of Hindi to help with translating the lessons. What Our Translation Team Contributes Adding written translations of lessons to other languages. Advising on any barriers that students from different cultures might encounter when understanding and relating to the stories we have written to motivate the lessons. • Public Benefits Internship at CONNECT!

    Chelsea, MA 02150
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

CONNECT Intake & Public Benefits Internship The Neighborhood Developers, Inc. (TND) creates vibrant neighborhoods where people from all walks of life can thrive. Focused in Chelsea and Revere, TND has crafted a remarkable track record of success through investments that are conceived, designed, and fostered by neighborhood residents, municipal partners, and many stakeholders. TND brings its core strengths -- building homes, engaging neighbors, and fostering economic mobility -- to community partnerships that create thriving families and strong neighborhoods. TND created and supports the CONNECT Financial Opportunity Center that co-locates and integrates the services of five agencies working together to improve the financial mobility of 4,000 clients annually. Based at the CONNECT office in Chelsea, the Intake & Public Benefits intern will work one-on-one to help families apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called food stamps) and make referrals to the WIC program. These public benefits have proven anti-poverty impacts for low income families and provide an important safety net. Each of these public benefits provides clients with a significant increase to their monthly income, but many of CONNECT’s clients are missing out on accessing these benefits due to systemic barriers in the application process, stigma associated with participation in government programs, or lack of awareness of eligibility. The Public Benefits intern will help eliminate barriers to financial stability among CONNECT’s low-income constituency through providing application assistance and case management support throughout the entire application process. The intern will help families to submit applications for benefits, collect required documentation, and navigate the complicated application process. Additional responsibilities include participating in weekly financial capabilities services staff meetings, providing an orientation of other services to clients, completing intake forms, calling the DTA and other customer assistance lines to help resolve client cases, and creating referrals to other services. Other tasks and activities may be added, based on the intern’s interests and organizational need. This position is 80% in person with 2 day work from home. Strong/proficient computer skills are required. This position is a good match for you if you like working directly with families, are bilingual (must be able to speak Spanish), have a high attention to detail, and can advocate for others. You’ll find that no two cases are the same, so this position requires creativity and flexibility in figuring out how to best help each client. The position also requires a high level of responsibility and ability to work independently. We are looking to fill multiple unpaid intern positions and will fill the positions on a rolling basis. The ideal candidate can commit to a minimum of 5/10 hours a week in the fall or 2 semesters. This position is only for Interns seeking course credit as part of their academic program. The schedule is flexible, and will be determined based on your availability and program need. This internship does not pay a stipend. To apply, please send a resume and a single paragraph describing why you are interested in the internship to Ruby Savinon, Program Manager: Rsavinon@tndinc.org. Serious inquiries only please. For more information about other ways to volunteer or get involved with Connect, please contact Program Director Alexa Shabecoff at (617) 545-8348 or by emailing Ashabecoff@tndinc.org

  • Meal on Wheels drivers needed in and around Brookline on Mondays and Fridays

    Brookline, MA 02446
It's Flexible! We'll work with your schedule

The Home Delivered Meals Program provides older adults with a nutritious lunch delivered to their door up to 5 days per week. It is an essential tool to prevent food insecurity, malnutrition, and social isolation when mobility challenges, illness, or disability make it difficult to grocery shop and prepare food. During the recent COVID pandemic, Springwell went from delivering 250,000 meals to 350,000 annually. Even with the end of pandemic restrictions, we continue to serve the same number of meals in response to the challenges of living on a fixed income in a period of inflation and the loneliness crisis. With the ongoing shifts in the economy and the job market, we have been unable to hire enough full-time drivers to deliver all these meals. Volunteers have generously responded to our recruiting efforts for drivers enabling us to deliver each meal in a timely manner Monday through Friday. We always need more drivers. Please volunteer to join us for a shift or two each week if the following qualifications make this opportunity a good fit for you: Must have a reliable car, a current driver’s license, and a clean driving record; Must be able to lift 25 pounds; and Must meet the regulatory pre-requisites for the position. Springwell will train volunteers and provide ongoing support to make sure each volunteer has the resources needed to deliver meals to older adults relying on this service. Please contact us! Email volunteer@springwell.com to start the process; or go online to learn more at https://springwell.com/resource/volunteer-home-delivered-meals-drivers/

Just imagine if you didn’t have a safe place to call home. You can help our vulnerable neighbors move out of crowded shelters and unsafe outdoor spaces into safe, stable housing and live hopeful, peaceful futures in our community. In fact, Friends of Boston's Homeless has been helping over 30 people each month move into a stable home of their own. They all need a little help getting set up in their new apartments. The Housewarming Baskets you make help people who struggle on our streets and in crowded shelters feel that same happiness and sense of security as they move into their new place and get started in their new futures in our community by providing some of the essential items we all need when we move into a home of our own. By assembling and donating Housewarming Baskets, you'll be an important part of welcoming people into their new homes where they'll finally find the stability and serenity we all need. This is a meaningful and fun opportunity you can do on your own or with friends and family, co-workers and colleagues. It’s as simple as assembling new (not used) items like cleaning supplies, dish soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, a set of sheets or towels, in a basket to be given as a housewarming gift to someone about to move into a place of their own - many for the first time in their lives. And please include a welcome note, they mean a lot to the people who receive them. You can also make this a fun Zoom by getting together with your co-workers, colleagues, friends and/or family and each person makes their own basket. You can create as many baskets as you'd like! You can drop off 24/7 at the Woods Mullen Women's Shelter, 794 Albany Street, right in the South End. • Visit Nubian Square "Beautification Program"

    55 Roxbury Streetsuite 190445Roxbury, MA 02119
    Thu, March 21, 2024 - Wed, June 19, 2024

In simplest terms, neighborhood beautification means making a neighborhood look and feel better. While the residents of some neighborhoods may be concerned with forcing their ideas of beauty and acceptability on others, most simply want their neighborhoods to be livable and pleasant. Neighborhood beautification, if it’s approached with the right attitude, can lead to more interaction among neighbors from diverse backgrounds, more neighborhood life, and a neighborhood look and feel that attracts new residents and businesses and supports both economic development and a sense of community. A neighborhood beautification program isn’t a single event ("Fix Up Your Street"), but rather a strategy to maintain, enhance, and/or change the character of your neighborhood over the long term. You may approach particular elements of our program one at a time, but your focus should be on your long-term vision for the neighborhood. Visit Nubian Square Neighborhood beautification program will can help attract new business. 1) Neighborhood businesses are important for many reasons: they provide convenient local shopping and services, they can offer jobs to neighborhood residents, and they can keep the neighborhood alive, contributing to Roxbury street life and economic development. Most business would prefer to move to areas that are attractive and where residents and other businesses take care of their properties. Well-kept neighborhoods with regular street traffic increases business. Visit Nubian Square Neighborhood beautification program can attract entertainment and culture. 2) As with businesses in general, a neighborhood beautification effort can attract attention from the entertainment industry as well: a theater company, a museum, a movie theater, etc.. Cultural attractions provide residents opportunities for recreation and culture, and can only help improve the quality of life. Visit Nubian Square Neighborhood beautification program can serve as the base for neighborhood revitalization. 3) Because a neighborhood beautification program will help to attract new residents, businesses, and cultural institutions, it can help turn a dull, mediocre neighborhoods into a vibrant, excellent one. It often takes only a small step or two to start a turnaround - a new restaurant, an art gallery, or an experimental theater may signal to the community that the neighborhood is on the upswing. It's a simple and inexpensive way to make a lasting impact for the homeless women and men in our community.
