Based at the CONNECT office in Chelsea, the Intake & Public Benefits intern will work one-on-one to help families apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called food stamps) and make referrals to the WIC program. These public benefits have proven anti-poverty impacts for low income families and provide an important safety net. Each of these public benefits provides clients with a significant increase to their monthly income, but many of CONNECT’s clients are missing out on accessing these benefits due to systemic barriers in the application process, stigma associated with participation in government programs, or lack of awareness of eligibility. The Public Benefits intern will help eliminate barriers to financial stability among CONNECT’s low-income constituency through providing application assistance and case management support throughout the entire application process. The intern will help families to submit applications for benefits, collect required documentation, and navigate the complicated application process. Additional responsibilities include participating in weekly financial capabilities services staff meetings, providing an orientation of other services to clients, completing intake forms, calling the DTA and other customer assistance lines to help resolve client cases, and creating referrals to other services. It is an essential tool to prevent food insecurity, malnutrition, and social isolation when mobility challenges, illness, or disability make it difficult to grocery shop and prepare food. During the recent COVID pandemic, Springwell went from delivering 250,000 meals to 350,000 annually. Even with the end of pandemic restrictions, we continue to serve the same number of meals in response to the challenges of living on a fixed income in a period of inflation and the loneliness crisis. With the ongoing shifts in the economy and the job market, we have been unable to hire enough full-time drivers to deliver all these meals. We have two types of tutoring opportunities: ESOL for students who are speakers of other languages and want to learn English or improve their English skills; or Basic Literacy for native English speakers who read at the 4th grade level or below, and who want to learn to read and write or improve their skills. Tutors work with one student individually, or may have the opportunity to teach a small group or class. In-person, remote, and hybrid tutoring options are available. Tutors commit to meeting with students 2 hours per week on a flexible schedule for 9-12 months. ALL volunteer tutors must attend a Volunteer Information Session prior to successfully completing an 18-hour tutor training, before they begin working with a student. We are looking for caring adults to serve as mentors for young people ages 6-24 with disabilities. Our goal in our one-to-one mentoring program, is to empower young people with disabilities to meet their full potential by matching them with a caring adult mentor, who serves as a role model and a friend. The relationship formed between the mentor and mentee has proven invaluable in improving the social and intellectual development and independence of youth and the experience is equally rewarding to the mentors!   Norfolk County RSVP is seeking volunteers age 55 + to tutor Immigrants and other adults seeking to improve their English-speaking skills. Tutoring is conducted virtually either by telephone of a video platform such as Zoom, depending on the preferences of the tutor and tutee. Hours and times are flexible, but typically, volunteers tutor 2-3 hours per week, This program is conducted by the Boston-Chinatown Neighborhood Center.
