Afghan officials say at least six people were killed in a suicide bomb blast near a check post in front of a high school in central Kabul Monday, close to a site where a demonstration had just broken up.
Islamic State's Afghan affiliate, known as IS Khorasan Province, claimed responsibility for the attack.
A member of the military was among those killed. At least 20 others were wounded.
Hundreds of people had gathered in the area earlier in the day to protest the lack of security in two Afghan provinces, Ghazni and Uruzgan, especially in districts populated mostly by the Shi'ite Hazara minority.
The protest started spontaneously by a few people Sunday night, according to ToloNews, an Afghan TV channel, but numbers swelled to hundreds by Monday morning.
The protesters dispersed after President Ashraf Ghani spoke to them over the phone and assured them of sending reinforcement to Malistan and Jaghori district of the Ghazni province.
Meanwhile, officials in another Afghan province Farah say around 30 local policemen and four civilians were killed and several others wounded in a Taliban attack on police out posts in Khak-e-Afghan district last night. Taliban also took four policemen with them as hostages. Dadullah Qani, a member of Farah provincial council, said children and women were also among the casualties.
