Parent - Dyad Reading
Boosting Your Student’s Reading Level at Home by Dyad Reading

What is Dyad Reading?

The dyad reading method is one way of reading with your child that is research based and shown to help students grow in their reading abilities. It is also a fun way to bond with your children!

How do you do it?

  • Share one book and sit side by side
  • Both read aloud – The adult a little louder and faster
  • Track with one finger beneath the text
  • Keep eyes on the words
  • Write down unknown words and talk about them
  • Have fun!

Teachers are seeing great results

Teacher Daisy Reyes has seen great results with her own students

“Dyad reading is like a weight-lifting workout. Your child is lifting the weights and you are spotting them. Over time they gain strength. My own daughter has been DYAD reading together with my husband. This activity has strengthened her reading skills as well as her relationship with her dad as they have found something that they enjoy together."

Interested in learning how to bring Dyad Reading workshops to your school?

Check out this folder with information on Dyad reading and how to teach parents to dyad read with their students. It is full of flyers, PowerPoints and bookmarks that you can share with families.

Last summer, a parent at Alta View Elementary led dyad reading workshops for families. 9 parents were trained to work with other parents and overall, 79 parents at their school were taught how to dyad read.

“We’re always told to read 15-20 minutes a day, but with a little change, you can make a big difference,” Parent said. Hosting dyad reading workshops is a great way to help families avoid summer learning loss and support their students year round!
