The number of parcels shipped from and within Britain last year for every member of the population was higher than in any other big global market analysed in a shipping index.

An average of 74 parcels per head was generated in Britain, up from 56 a year earlier, as the pandemic boosted demand for online shopping.

The parcel shipping index created by Pitney Bowes, a technology company, analysed 13 markets, including the United States and China. It found that global parcel volume reached 131.2 billion in 2020, equating to 4,160 parcels shipped per second — an increase of 27 per cent year-on-year.
