Student artwork focuses on workplace health and safety

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – In order to help raise awareness of workplace health and safety, Workplace Safety North (WSN) sponsored an artwork challenge for two secondary schools in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
 
The pre-COVID-19 contest asked students from Dennis Franklin School and Superior Collegiate High School to depict artwork that focused on workplace health and safety, diversity, inclusivity, and mental health.
 
Last month, WSN unveiled a virtual gallery showcasing the original artwork to about 200 virtual delegates at the launch of the WSN COVID-19 Conversations lunch and learn webinar series.
 
“We’re starting the health and safety conversation about COVID-19 and getting folks to talk about what they’re experiencing, and how to best move forward,” says event host Angele Poitras, WSN Community Engagement Specialist.
 
Over the last two years, WSN has sponsored an artwork challenge to secondary schools in northern Ontario. Last year, students from Sudbury Secondary were showcased, and this year, students from Dennis Covey School as well as Superior Collegiate High School in Thunder Bay, Ontario, share their talent.
 
“These students have created awesome artwork that is so creative and thought-provoking. Each entry has a description detailing the ideas the artist is conveying. We are so thankful they shared their time and creativity for this worthwhile project,” says Poitras. “Their messages help raise awareness of the importance of staying safe and healthy at work—whether you’re at home or on the frontline.”
 
“Students bring a unique voice and increased awareness of health and safety in northern communities,” says Paul Andre, WSN President and CEO. “We want to highlight their talent and voices and raise awareness of how important it is to have the safety conversation.”
 
Workplace Safety North will continue to showcase the student artwork on social media, and encourages people to visit the virtual art gallery to see a detailed description of each work in the students’ own words.
