Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias. Social determinants of health prevent many people from racial and ethnic minority groups from having fair opportunities for economic, physical, and emotional health (Working Together to Reduce Black Maternal Mortality | Health Equity Features | CDC). Howard County Medical Center is developing a strategy to address maternal morbidity and improve outcomes by implementing both clinical and social determinants of health interventions. Please join us in-person to spread awareness on this important issue. On May 30th 2024, HCMC will host the screening of Toxic: A Black Woman's Story and a panel discussion with patients and experts on maternal health disparities. The in-person attendance will be for no more than 50 people, so registration will fill up quickly.
