Applicant Information

Thank you for your interest in applying. Please read the information below before completing the application.
  • We are conducting a research study to collect public views about human gene editing in the United States. If selected, you will be participating in a day long in-person facilitated discussion forum at the Mayborn Museum Complex on Saturday, October 2, between 10am-4pm.
  • We are inviting your participation, by completing the prescreening survey (application) below to provide your demographic information, experience, and perspectives. We will choose 60 participants from the applicant pool based on a number of factors in order to ensure a diversity of background, experiences and perspectives among our participant group.
  • If selected, you will be invited to spend 6 hours participating in the focus group discussion with other participants including lunch and breaks. We will be collecting your anonymous workbooks, taking notes of your conversations and participation.
  • To participate, you must be willing to wear a mask, seat at a Table with up to 6 other participants and a facilitator, and share your thoughts.
  • Your participation in this study is voluntary. Participants who haven’t received any prior compensation from Arizona State University (ASU) in excess of $600 in the current year will receive a $100 Gift Card (American Express/Mastercard/VISA) in mail approximately 3 weeks after the completion of the forum.  Otherwise, you will be required to complete a W-9 form and an additional week will be required for processing. You must be 18 or older to participate in the research study.
  • Participants in the study will have the opportunity to learn about and express their views on human gene editing. There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts to your participation.
  • Your responses including (a) the demographic data collected in the prescreening survey (application), (b) information collected in worksheets and discussion notes, (c) event evaluation survey, and (d) optional post interview, will be anonymous. The results of this study may be used in reports, presentations, or publications but your name will not be known. Most results will only be shared in the aggregate form and any individual comments will remain anonymous.
  • The discussions may be recorded to allow the researchers to more fully explore the deliberations. All recordings will be kept in a secure location and be used only by the researchers to further our understanding of the deliberations that take place. In addition, any notes taken by the research team will be secured and used only by the research team for research purposes with all personally identifiable information removed.
  • If you have any questions concerning the research study, please contact the research team at: mahmud.farooque@asu.edu or 202-446-0397. If you have any questions about your rights as a subject/participant in this research, or if you feel you have been placed at risk, you can contact the Chair of the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board, through the ASU Office of Research Integrity and Assurance at (480) 965-6788.
  • Please note that this forum may be moved to a virtual format to comply with Baylor University protocols. Registrants will be informed via email.
