TOHICKON WELCOMES STUDENTS BACK FOR HYBRID ONE AND TWO
Dear Tohickon Families,
The month of October has arrived! On the 1st of the month, we welcomed some students back to our building for the first time since March. The day was very different from a typical day at Tohickon, as students had to acclimate to school signage, new walking patterns, smaller class sizes and social distancing. All of us at Tohickon were thrilled to see our students and we did everything possible to help students feel safe, comfortable and ready to learn.
The hybrid structure is new for everyone and the staff is making adjustments and modifications every day in order to best meet the needs of our students. We have been amazed at how well our students have acclimated and adhered to the expectations that we have set forth for them. Moving forward, we intend to improve upon this new format and actively look for new ways to increase the effectiveness of our educational delivery.
Although we have been very happy with the Hybrid Plan, we realize that this format may be challenging for some of our students. If you feel that your child is having a very difficult time or would like to discuss any general concerns, we encourage you to reach out to our guidance department so that we can work together to find solutions on how to make this process easier for your child. The Tohickon Counselors are available to communicate with you anytime throughout the school day. You can contact our guidance department by calling 267-893-3310.
On behalf of the staff at Tohickon Middle School, I wish you a wonderful month! If you have any general questions, please do not hesitate to contact us in the main office at 267-893-3300.
Sincerely,
Mr. Marton, Tohickon Principal

IMPORTANT READING MESSAGE FROM OUR DISTRICT READING SUPERVISOR
Dear Families:
Thank you for your patience and support as we begin the 2020 school year. We are working around the clock to provide your children with a meaningful education. One of our goals for CB students is to develop lifelong reading habits. In the spring of 2016, our district welcomed Penny Kittle, author of Book Love and many other titles, to share her motivating teaching stories with our faculty. During her visit she provided teachers with advice, inspiration, and practical strategies on how to increase the volume and complexity of texts our students read, create a balance of student and teacher assigned texts, and build classroom libraries with themes that matter to 21st century students. Our teachers and students have had great success with applying her strategies!
Our goal is to have students reading on a regular basis because they want to. There are times during the year where reading independently will include a book the entire class is reading together. Other times, your child will be reading a book of their choice, either for their own pleasure or for an independent reading activity assigned to them. When this occurs, we encourage students to choose books of interest to them. When students do this, they are more motivated and engaged in the book, and they will find meaning in the text. We encourage your involvement as your child selects independent reading books. If you ever have a question about a book your child has selected for independent reading, please reach out to the classroom teacher or school librarian for assistance. Additionally, you can visit the following websites for information about a title:
· The School Library Journal http://www.slj.com/
· The American Library Association http://www.ala.org/
· Common Sense Media https://www.commonsensemedia.org/
Our priority is to foster a rich and enjoyable reading life for all. If you discover you are not comfortable with an independent reading selection your child has made, you can redirect your child to a book that better upholds the values that your family honors. Since we, as teachers, cannot read every book available to our students, you play a critical role. Thank you for supporting reading in your child’s life and helping to determine if a title is appropriate for your child.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUB INFORMATION
General Information about After School Clubs
In order for clubs to run, a teacher must be willing to sponsor the club after school and there must be a reasonable level of student interest. For these reasons, Tohickon clubs may be different from year to year.
Due to the late start for in person learning, many of our club offerings have been delayed. Currently, we do not have any registered clubs, but we are hopeful that we this will change as our teachers become more acclimated to the hybrid environment. This year, clubs may be offered virtually or in person. We will update you each month in our newsletter with our club listings.

From the Nurse's Office
Welcome back! As we begin the transition back to in-person learning, we ask all parents/guardians to go online and complete the Student Emergency Form through the parent portal if you have not already done so. It must be completed every school year. Please update your emergency contacts as this is extremely important in the event your child needs to be picked up from school. You are being asked to have someone available to pick up your child from school within 30 minutes. You can update demographics, health conditions, and may give permission for the administration of an analgesic (Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen) while your child is in school.
A grab and go breakfast and lunch is available to ALL STUDENTS AT NO COST when they come in from the bus in the morning and at dismissal.
We encourage all students to carry a water bottle to keep hydrated during the day. Water filling stations are available in multiple locations throughout the school.
