Topic 9: Count Numbers to 20
Count Quantities 11 to 20
Throughout Topic 9, students use the correct words as they count 11 to 20 objects. As done previously with a lesser number of objects, students "tag" each object with one and only one number. It is important to note that the verbal sequence for the teen numbers 14, 16, 17, 18, and 19 follows a pattern by beginning with the ones place and then adding "teen" on the end. It can be confusing for students that the other numbers (11,12,13, and 15) do not follow that same verbal pattern. The written pattern, however, for the teen numbers is clear and consistent, and it should be emphasized. Lessons also reinforce the important concept that when counting a group of objects, the last number name said tells how many objects are in the group.
Topic 10: Compose Numbers 11 to 19
Make the Numbers 11 to 19
Students compose all of the teen numbers by putting together 10 ones and some more. They represent composition with objects, drawings, and equations.
Topic 10: Decompose Numbers 11 to 19
Find Parts of the Numbers 11 to 19
Students decompose all of the teen numbers by breaking apart the number into 10 ones and the remaining ones. They represent decomposition with objects, drawings, and equations.
1st Grade Math
Topic 11-Use Models and Strategies to Subtract 10
Subtract Tens: Students use place-value blocks, a hundred chart, and an open number line to subtract a multiple of 10 from another multiple of 10.
Use Addition to Subtract Tens: Students use an open number line to count on by tens to find a missing addend.
Subtract 10 Using Mental Math: Students use mental math to subtract 10.
Topic 12- Measure Lengths
Topic 13- Time and Money
2nd Grade Math
Topic 12- Measuring Length
Use Standard Units to Estimate Length: Students learn to estimate length in standard customary units by using familiar objects, such as paper clips, and personal referents, such as a thumb. Using familiar benchmarks and personal referents helps students understand the size of standard units.
Measure with Customary and Metric Units: Students use rulers, yardsticks, or measuring tapes to measure to the nearest customary unit (inches, feet, and yards) or to the nearest metric unit (centimeters and meters). Students learn to use the halfway mark on a ruler or other measurement tool as a way to determine the nearest unit.
Topic 13: Shapes and Their Attributes
In Topic 13, students learn to recognize triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons by examining the number of sides and the number of vertices of the shape. They learn about polygons and angles, including right angles. They use these attributes to describe and draw triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons.
