Curriculum Connection
K-5 Science and/or Social Studies -April 2024
Kindergarten Science
Habitats
Students will learn that living things need water, air, and resources from the land, and they live in places that have the things they need. Students will use models to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals (including humans) and the places they live.
Home Sweet Home- Activity
In this activity, students choose one animal/plant, draw its habitat, and label how it is meeting its survival needs (food, shelter, water, and air for an animal or food, water, and air for a plant.
Build My Habitat - Activity
Students will build a terrarium for an insect in order to observe how different types of habitats meet the needs of plants and animals.
Organisms' Impact on Environments
In this scope, students will learn how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.
Things Change- Activity
In this activity, students organize a set of picture cards to show how animals change their environment.
Beaver Dam- Engineering Solution
Students design a solution that will block a river to create a pond that will provide a place for a family of beavers to build a home.
1st Grade Science
Parts of Plants
Students learn plants have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow. The shape and stability of structures of natural and designed objects are related to their function.
Watch it Grow-Activity
Students observe various vegetables, seeds, and fruits and they identify and describe their different parts.
Humans Mimicking Plants- Activity
Students look at how inventors and engineers have studied helpful plant parts and figured out ways to help humans solve problems too.
Helpful Plants- Engineering Solution
Students will use the scientific knowledge they gained about plant parts as well as 21st Century Skills of collaboration to design and construct an item that will help people.
Plant Survival
Students will learn how plants use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet all of their needs.
Growing Sideways-Scientific Investigation
In this investigation, students observe how a plant grows toward the Sun.
Growing Spuds-Scientific Investigation
In this activity, students will explore how potato sprouts behave in a warm, moist environment versus a cold, dry environment.
2nd Grade Science
Properties of Materials
In this scope, students will learn that different properties are suited for different purposes.
Soak It In!-Inquiry Investigation
Students observe the strength and absorbency of two different types of paper towels.
The Great Shoe Slide- Scientific Investigation
Students discover the best type of shoes for walking on a smooth floor.
Build a Monster-Engineering Solution
Students will use the scientific knowledge of physical properties as well as the 21st Century Skill of collaboration to design and construct a toy that fits the toy company's criteria.
Changes From Heat
In this scope, students learn heating and cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not.Heat it Up!-Scientific Investigation
Students discover the effect heat has on different materials.
3rd Grade Social Studies
Social Studies Unit 4: Economy and Government of Missouri
- Overview of Unit:
Students will learn how the economy and local government works in Missouri.
Essential Questions:
- Why is the Missouri Constitution important to the citizens of Missouri?
- Why are the branches of government important to our state?
- I can explain major purposes of the Missouri Constitution.
- I can explain and give examples of how governments balance individual rights with common good to solve local community or state issues.
- I can identify and explain the functions of the three branches of government in the state government.
- I can recognize and explain the significance of Missouri symbols, such as the Gateway Arch, Official state symbols, etc.
Science Unit 3: Process and Impact of Natural Hazards
Explore 1: A Tale of Two Houses
- How can natural hazards affect our homes?
Explore 2: Rising Expectations
- How can we protect New Orleans from rising water?
4th Grade- Science
Science Unit 4: Earth and Space Science: Rock Patterns
If environments change so slowly, how can we know what they used to be like?
Explore 1: Rock Layers
What can fossil evidence tell us about the kinds of events that affect the layers of Earth?
Explore 2: Earthquake!
How does an earthquake cause changes in the the pattern of rock formations?
5th Grade Science
Science Unit 4: Physical Science: Matter is Everywhere
How do we know matter exists, even if it cannot be seen?
Explore 1: Where's the Sugar?
Students dissolve sugar in water to learn that matter is still there, even though it cannot be seen.
Explore 2: Engineering Solution: Contaminated Water
Students will use the scientific knowledge they gained as well as the 21st Century Skill of collaboration to design a solution that will help them figure out which water sample has been contaminated.
Science Unit 4: Physical Science: Changes to Matter
Can matter just disappear?
Explore 1: State of Matter Changes
Students melt different materials and determine whether or not a change in the physical state of matter changes the matter's total weight.
Explore 2: Sweet Tea
By making a cup of tea, students learn that the total weight of a solution or mixture is equal to the weight of the individual ingredients.
Explore 3: Scientific Investigation: What's My Weight?
Students investigate what happens to the weight of a mixture during a chemical reaction.
