Reading Unit 2: Readers Read, Think, and Talk about Emergent Storybooks and Familiar Share Texts
As Unit 2 continues, students will learn to have better conversations about emergent storybooks with reading partners, while inventing creative ways to interact with books and one another. Students will also learn how to read unfamiliar books and informational books. Most of the texts that students encounter will be unfamiliar to them. Teachers will support students so they become enthusiastic about turning pages of unfamiliar texts wherever they find them, and so they feel empowered to make meaning in any book they’re holding.
Writing Unit 2: Looking Closely-Observing, Labeling, and Listing Like Scientists
1st Grade ELA
Foundational Skills
Phonological Awareness: phoneme categorization and identification, phoneme blending, substitution, and addition
Phonics: consonant digraphs th, sh, -ng, ch, -tch, wh
three-letter blends spl, spr, squ, str
Fluency: Read orally to build fluency. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Language: inflectional endings, closed syllables, plurals
Reading Unit 2: Word Detectives Use All They Know to Solve Words
Students learn to pay attention to letters and sounds as they word solve. Students will use these word-solving strategies to figure out tricky words while also monitoring for meaning.
Writing Unit 2- Writing Book Reviews
Students will write review after review, writing about anything and everything: toys, restaurants, video games, and the works!
2nd Grade ELA
Foundational Skills
Phonological Awareness: Blend and Segment; Add,
Delete and Substitute Sounds
Phonics: R-Controlled Vowels
Fluency: Build Automaticity; Read Texts with Fluency
and Purpose
Language:
● Benchmark: adding suffixes; compound words, contractions

Reading Unit 3: Reading Informational Books
Writing Unit 3: Lab Reports and Science Books
In the first bend of this unit, students will study a shared class science topic (force and motion or a STEMscopes topic). Children jot and sketch as they go, getting a four-page lab report booklet started in the meeting area, with their hypotheses on one page, their procedures on another, their result on a third, and their conclusions on a fourth.
