Medical Sonography
Information Session
Purpose of Info Session
To provide information pertaining to the
admissions process for the Medical
Sonography program.
By completing this session and passing the
test, you are acknowledging that you’ve
been informed about and understand the
minimum admissions requirements, the
competitive admissions procedures, and
are aware of the deadlines for the clinical
Medical Sonography application
Career at a Glance
The program prepares the student for a career as a
medical sonographer, a skilled health care professional
who uses high-frequency sound waves that produce
images of internal structures of the body.
A person in this career…
Sonographers, also called ultrasound technicians and
diagnostic medical sonographers, use ultrasound high
frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body
tissues. This helps doctors diagnose and monitor a variety of
conditions such as heart disease, pregnancy and cancer.
As a sonographer, you’ll work directly with patients. Most of
your work is done at diagnostic imaging machines in dimly lit
rooms, but you may also perform procedures at patients’
bedsides. Because imaging is sometimes needed in
emergencies, sonographers sometimes work evenings,
weekends or overnight.
Wake Tech’s Associate Degree in Medical
Sonography
The program is accredited by Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
(SACS). www.sacscoc.org
Upon entry of first cohort of students, the program
will seek accreditation through Commission on
Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs
(CAAHEP). www.caahep.org
Eligibility for Licensure
Graduates of accredited programs may be eligible to
take examinations in ultrasound physics and
instrumentation and specialty examinations
administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic
Medical Sonographers and find employment in clinics,
physician's offices, mobile services, hospitals and
educational institutions.

Important considerations before
applying to the AAS Medical
Sonography program
Drug Testing and Criminal Background
Checks are required for Clinical Courses
• Results of these tests could impact your ability to complete
sonography clinical courses and therefore your ability to meet
sonography program requirements or completion
• Many health care employers now require negative results from drug
testing and criminal background checks before employment
• Clinical affiliate institutions require a criminal background check and
drug screening of our students just as they do for their employees
before participation in patient care. The student is responsible for
correction of errors on any drug screen or criminal background
check report.
Health Records for Sonography Students
• The following are required for participation in clinical course activities:
– Students admitted to the sonography program must be physically and mentally
capable of performing the Sonography Technical Performance Standards
– Students will be required to provide documentation of a physical exam, TB testing,
and immunization records prior to the start of classes.
– Students will need to obtain and maintain health insurance cover during the
clinical component of their program of study. Students who are accepted into the
clinical portion of their program will be given more information and instructions
about this requirement at program orientation sessions
– Annual Flu vaccinations are required when they become available
– Students SHOULD NOT submit any health forms until after they are formally
admitted to the Nursing program
Time Commitment/Course load
• College places more emphasis on you as an independent learner supported by a
professor knowledgeable in the course material. As a result, you will spend 2-4
hours a day in class and be expected to spend as long as it takes outside of class to
master the content of the course. Therefore, to help determine the course load
most appropriate for you, use the formula:
– 3 credit hours = 3 hours in class/week = 6-9 hours study time/week
– 12 credit hours = 12 hours in class/week = 24-36 hours study time/week
• It is important to remember that there are only 24 hours in each day and only 168
hours in each week. Make your choices with all possible variables being
considered. A Medical Sonography student’s classes are an important commitment
and an investment in the future.

How do I get started?
• There are 2 phases when applying for Medical
Sonography:
– Phase 1
• Becoming a pre-Sonography student to take general
education classes.
– Phase 2
• Applying to the Medical Sonography program to take
SON classes
Phase 1:
Getting Started at Wake Tech
You must complete the following steps to be admitted to Wake Tech as a
pre-Sonography student:
1. Complete the NC Residency Determination (RDS) Interview (prior to completing an
online admission application).
2. Complete a Wake Tech application for admission online.
3. Complete FAFSA online if applicable.
4. Complete a mandatory Medical Sonography information session.
5. Submit official copies of High School transcripts and all previously attended
Colleges/Universities.
a. Once received, your file will be reviewed for admissions and course placement.
b. If needed, register and take the placement test. For registration and list of
exemptions, visit testingcenter.waketech.edu
NC Residency Determination
What is the NC Residency Determination Service (RDS)?
• RDS provides residency determinations in accordance with North Carolina
residency laws and applicable federal statutes for the purposes of:
– In-state tuition
– State financial aid
• RDS provides a process to claim and document NC residency.
• RDS allows the use of one residency determination for admissions
applications to multiple NC colleges and universities and to demonstrate
residency eligibility for state grant purposes.
• Once completed, you will be provided with a residency certification
number (RCN)
Applying to Wake Tech
• After completing the residency determination and receiving
your RCN, visit apply.waketech.edu and fill out the Wake Tech
application through CFNC
– You will select Medical Sonography as your intended major
• Current or Special/Visiting Students
– Contact a Health Sciences Admission and Academic
Advisor after the information session to have your major
changed.
Transcripts
• All transcripts (high school and college) must be original
and come directly from the school. Wake Tech does
accept electronic transcripts.
• Transcripts will be reviewed by a Health Sciences
Admission and Academic Advisor to see if a prospective
student meets minimum admission requirements to
waive the college placement test.
Transfer credit
• College transcripts are only reviewed after a student has been accepted to the college.
• Official transcripts from accredited institutions will be reviewed against established standard
equivalencies, and transfer equivalency will be recommended by the appropriate dean (or a
designee).
– Advisors do NOT award transfer credits. The registrar is responsible for transcript
evaluations.
– If you have questions/concerns about transfer credits, please
email tranevalreq@waketech.edu.
• All decisions about transfer equivalency are discretionary on the part of the college. The
college will apply principles recommended by accredited higher education organizations that
set standards for transfer credit. A transcript review can take 6 – 8 weeks to process.
• Students may be required to submit a course syllabus if additional information is needed.
Where can I see my transfer credits?
• Log in to WebAdvisor
• Go to Current Curriculum Students
• Plan and Register
• My Progress
• Any courses with grades starting with “T” are courses that
transferred to Wake Tech.
• If you don’t see a transfer credit you believe you should have
received, you can submit a transcript evaluation appeal
through Student Forms or email tranevalreq@waketech.edu.

Medical Sonography info session for Wake Tech

  • 2. Purpose of Info Session To provide information pertaining to the admissions process for the Medical Sonography program. By completing this session and passing the test, you are acknowledging that you’ve been informed about and understand the minimum admissions requirements, the competitive admissions procedures, and are aware of the deadlines for the clinical Medical Sonography application
  • 3. Career at a Glance The program prepares the student for a career as a medical sonographer, a skilled health care professional who uses high-frequency sound waves that produce images of internal structures of the body.
  • 4. A person in this career… Sonographers, also called ultrasound technicians and diagnostic medical sonographers, use ultrasound high frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body tissues. This helps doctors diagnose and monitor a variety of conditions such as heart disease, pregnancy and cancer. As a sonographer, you’ll work directly with patients. Most of your work is done at diagnostic imaging machines in dimly lit rooms, but you may also perform procedures at patients’ bedsides. Because imaging is sometimes needed in emergencies, sonographers sometimes work evenings, weekends or overnight.
  • 5. Wake Tech’s Associate Degree in Medical Sonography The program is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS). www.sacscoc.org Upon entry of first cohort of students, the program will seek accreditation through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). www.caahep.org
  • 6. Eligibility for Licensure Graduates of accredited programs may be eligible to take examinations in ultrasound physics and instrumentation and specialty examinations administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and find employment in clinics, physician's offices, mobile services, hospitals and educational institutions.
  • 7. Student Resources https://www.waketech.edu/student-services Veteran Services - Students eligible for Veterans' educational benefits are required to verify their attendance through the VA Certifying Official in Financial Aid. Veterans should notify the VA Certifying Official immediately anytime their status changes or their schedules are modified. Office hours are 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Friday. • Email: veterans@waketech.edu Disability Support Services - Individuals with disabilities who need assistance or require special accommodations to access college activities should request such services in advance by calling Disability Support Services at 919-866-5670 or Sorenson Video Phone for Deaf 919-324-1508. Individualized Learning Center (ILC) - The ILC provides Wake Tech students with the tools they need to develop as successful, independent learners. They offer professional tutoring without charge to Wake Tech students at six campus locations and online. Career Lens - Available to Wake Tech prospective/enrolled students and alumni. Career Counselors provide guidance in defining goals, exploring career pathways, and using career and employment tools and resources. To learn more, contact Laura Bethea at lcbethea@waketech.edu or 919-866-5424.
  • 8. Important considerations before applying to the AAS Medical Sonography program
  • 9. Drug Testing and Criminal Background Checks are required for Clinical Courses • Results of these tests could impact your ability to complete sonography clinical courses and therefore your ability to meet sonography program requirements or completion • Many health care employers now require negative results from drug testing and criminal background checks before employment • Clinical affiliate institutions require a criminal background check and drug screening of our students just as they do for their employees before participation in patient care. The student is responsible for correction of errors on any drug screen or criminal background check report.
  • 10. Health Records for Sonography Students • The following are required for participation in clinical course activities: – Students admitted to the sonography program must be physically and mentally capable of performing the Sonography Technical Performance Standards – Students will be required to provide documentation of a physical exam, TB testing, and immunization records prior to the start of classes. – Students will need to obtain and maintain health insurance cover during the clinical component of their program of study. Students who are accepted into the clinical portion of their program will be given more information and instructions about this requirement at program orientation sessions – Annual Flu vaccinations are required when they become available – Students SHOULD NOT submit any health forms until after they are formally admitted to the Nursing program
  • 11. Time Commitment/Course load • College places more emphasis on you as an independent learner supported by a professor knowledgeable in the course material. As a result, you will spend 2-4 hours a day in class and be expected to spend as long as it takes outside of class to master the content of the course. Therefore, to help determine the course load most appropriate for you, use the formula: – 3 credit hours = 3 hours in class/week = 6-9 hours study time/week – 12 credit hours = 12 hours in class/week = 24-36 hours study time/week • It is important to remember that there are only 24 hours in each day and only 168 hours in each week. Make your choices with all possible variables being considered. A Medical Sonography student’s classes are an important commitment and an investment in the future. Class hrs/week Lab hrs/week Clinical hrs/week Total time in class/week Study time hrs/week SON 110 1 3 3 7 21 SON 130 2 3 0 5 15 SON 271 1 3 0 4 12
  • 12. How do I get started? • There are 2 phases when applying for Medical Sonography: – Phase 1 • Becoming a pre-Sonography student to take general education classes. – Phase 2 • Applying to the Medical Sonography program to take SON classes
  • 13. Phase 1: Getting Started at Wake Tech You must complete the following steps to be admitted to Wake Tech as a pre-Sonography student: 1. Complete the NC Residency Determination (RDS) Interview (prior to completing an online admission application). 2. Complete a Wake Tech application for admission online. 3. • 14. NC Residency Determination What is the NC Residency Determination Service (RDS)? • RDS provides residency determinations in accordance with North Carolina residency laws and applicable federal statutes for the purposes of: – In-state tuition – State financial aid • RDS provides a process to claim and document NC residency. • RDS allows the use of one residency determination for admissions applications to multiple NC colleges and universities and to demonstrate residency eligibility for state grant purposes. • Once completed, you will be provided with a residency certification number (RCN)
  • 15. Applying to Wake Tech • After completing the residency determination and receiving your RCN, visit apply.waketech.edu and fill out the Wake Tech application through CFNC – You will select Medical Sonography as your intended major • Current or Special/Visiting Students – Contact a Health Sciences Admission and Academic Advisor after the information session to have your major changed.
  • 16. Transcripts • All transcripts (high school and college) must be original and come directly from the school. Wake Tech does accept electronic transcripts. • Transcripts will be reviewed by a Health Sciences Admission and Academic Advisor to see if a prospective student meets minimum admission requirements to waive the college placement test.
  • 17. Transfer credit • College transcripts are only reviewed after a student has been accepted to the college. • Official transcripts from accredited institutions will be reviewed against established standard equivalencies, and transfer equivalency will be recommended by the appropriate dean (or a designee). – Advisors do NOT award transfer credits. The registrar is responsible for transcript evaluations. – If you have questions/concerns about transfer credits, please email tranevalreq@waketech.edu. • All decisions about transfer equivalency are discretionary on the part of the college. The college will apply principles recommended by accredited higher education organizations that set standards for transfer credit. A transcript review can take 6 – 8 weeks to process. • Students may be required to submit a course syllabus if additional information is needed.
  • 18. Where can I see my transfer credits? • Log in to WebAdvisor • Go to Current Curriculum Students • Plan and Register • My Progress • Any courses with grades starting with “T” are courses that transferred to Wake Tech. • If you don’t see a transfer credit you believe you should have received, you can submit a transcript evaluation appeal through Student Forms or email tranevalreq@waketech.edu.
  • 19. Phase 1 completion Review of Phase 1 o Complete NC Residency determination o Complete Wake Tech college Application o Complete Info Session and pass test o Submit all Official Transcripts (high school and any college) o Take placement test, if needed Once you have completed all requirements for Phase 1, make sure your application has been processed, and you have been accepted as a Pre-Medical Sonography student. • 22. • If you are new to Wake Tech or have not successfully completed an online course (with a grade of A, B, or C) at Wake Tech in the past five years, you must complete eLearning Intro before you can register for an online course. • eLearning Intro is a FREE orientation available in Blackboard. You can take it at any time! It provides a series of quizzes to assess your knowledge and learning modules to assist you with: – Online Learning Expectations: persistence and time management skills for success online – Using the Computer: for completing assignments and assessments online – Blackboard Bootcamp: how to navigate, communicate, and collaborate on Blackboard • Each module takes between 20 minutes and 3 hours to complete; most students complete all three modules in 1 to 5 hours. You must score 90 or higher on each module to move on to the next one. After you’ve completed all three, you’ll be able to register for an online course in approximately 2 to 3 hours.
