Seattle University placed among the top universities in a national sustainability competition. Among 200-plus institutions competing in the 2021 Campus Race to Zero Waste, Seattle University finished ninth in the nation in the waste diversion category and first among universities in SU’s Carnegie Class (medium).

Through recycling and composting, SU diverted more than 76,000 pounds of waste from the landfill during the eight-week competition. The resulting reduction in greenhouse gas emissions amounts to 90 metric tons of CO2, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of eight households or taking 18 cars off the road.
