LAW STUDENT EXTERNSHIPS

QLaw Foundation externs will provide core support to the LGBTQ2S+ Legal Clinic and Transgender Legal Clinic, including conducting intake and screening interviews, scheduling clients, researching legal issues to support volunteer attorneys, conducting case assessment interviews, and drafting community outreach materials.  Externs will also provide support for direct client representation and community legal advocacy support, including legal research, advocacy writing, and drafting community outreach materials. 

Our organization is friendly, inclusive, and centers clients and community relationships.  We support a diversity of learning styles, collaborative work, hands-on supervision, and supportive mentorship. 

Qualifications Must be a 2L or 3L.  Rule 9 status not required.  Bilingual and multilingual students are especially encouraged to apply (Spanish preferred).

VOLUNTEERING WITH OUR LEGAL CLINICS

Our Legal Clinics provide free legal services specifically designed to address the needs of individuals and couples within the LGBTQ2S+ and Transgender communities. Volunteer opportunities are available for volunteer attorneys, clinic assistants, language interpreters and translators. 

LGBTQ2S+ Legal Clinic 

1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, 7:00–8:30 PM 

Appointments for the LGBTQ2S+ Legal Clinic are currently being held by phone, and volunteers are welcome to join from anywhere in the state. 

Transgender Legal Clinic 

Once a month on the 4th Tuesday, 7:00-8:30 PM 

The Transgender Legal Clinic is a drop-in clinic and appointments are held over zoom. Volunteers are welcome to join from anywhere in the state.  

Volunteer Commitment 

Volunteers are asked to volunteer once every 6-8 weeks for at least one year. Fill out the volunteer interest form below and a member of our staff will be in contact with you regarding next steps. 

Volunteer Positions 

  • Volunteer Attorneys (particularly located in Central and Eastern Washington) 
  • Volunteer Clinic Assistants (open to any non-lawyer interested in volunteering) 
  • Language Interpreters and Translators (must be fully fluent in both English and second language) 

Volunteer Onboarding 

After submitting the Volunteer Interest form a member of the QLaw Foundation staff will reach out VIA email with the required training videos and materials. Once you have completed all training materials you will be scheduled to shadow at least one clinic shift.  

We also offer an optional new volunteer orientation over zoom once every quarter as a space for you to familiarize yourself with the organization and to ask any questions you may have for our staff.
