Port of Entry English Language Development Program (POE)

About the Port of Entry Program

Port of Entry (better known as POE) is a unique, intensive language development program designed to provide international students and new immigrants with the language skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to succeed in higher education and professional careers in the United States.

Students actively participate in the mastering of language skills and are taught by experienced faculty specializing in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL).

key Key Components

Communicative Language Teaching: This method emphasizes communication and encourages learners to actively use the language in real-life situations while building on practical language skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Personalization: POE recognizes that learners have different needs and learning styles and instructors try to customize content based on learners' interests, goals, and proficiency levels.

Integration of Technology: At QCC, language learners have access to multimedia resources that can enhance the learning experience and make it more engaging and accessible.

Cultural Awareness: Language learning is intimately connected to cultural understanding and at the classes at QCC, we incorporate cultural aspects to provide language learners with a connection to the greater Queens community.

Long-term Focus: Learning a language is a gradual process, and that is at POE, we have a long-term plan in place for students. Not only do we support learners" development from beginner to advanced levels, but we provide them with ongoing opportunities for personal and career growth.
