Happy Family, a children’s animated television series focused on changing social attitudes and providing accurate information about Covid-19, won two awards at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2020 competition last week.

A joint press release issued by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the NGO Save the Children, UNICEF and USAID’s Breakthrough-ACTION project said on October 26 that Happy Family won awards for Best Preschool Programme and Best Animated Programme in the national round of the competition.

Fiona McKay, the CEO of the Asian Academy Creative Awards, said: “I would like to congratulate you on winning the national round of the competition.”

The series was developed to share Covid-19 prevention messages with young children and their caregivers.

The press release said: “The series provides children and caretakers with skills to protect themselves from the Covid-19 virus, stop it from spreading, and cope with the pandemic’s aftermath”.

Submissions from several Asian countries were reviewed by more than 300 judges.

“The ‘edutainment’ series has a target audience of 5- to 10-year-olds, and revolves around a colourful family of rabbits,” the press release said.

“The storyline and messaging spans handwashing, social distancing, learning from home, mental and physical wellbeing, and stigma and discrimination. Each episode is unique and designed to be appealing to parents and other caregivers who will also learn, alongside their children, how to apply prevention techniques for Covid-19.”

Say Sokpheap, the communications manager for Save the Children, told The Post on October 26 that her organisation is excited that their video won the two awards.

She said the popular video increases the chance that children will learn the lessons presented and put their new skills into practice.

The competition’s final awards show, which will crown international winners, will be presented in December. Winners will receive a “Goddess of Creativity” trophy crafted by the designers of the Emmys and Golden Globes awards.

“The final result will be announced in early December and we hope we could win the award,” Sokpheap said.

Happy Family first aired on television and the Facebook pages of the education ministry, Save the Children and UNICEF on May and will run until the end of this month.
