Charles Verdin, Sr. 

 

Chairperson

Chairman Charles "Chuckie" Verdin was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.   He began school at the Indian school in lower Pointe-au-Chien and then attended PAC Elementary when it integrated to allow Indians to attend.  He went on to graduate from South Terrebonne High School.  He is a commercial fisherman and a tugboat captain.  He has served as the Chairman of the Pointe-au-Chien Tribe since 1999.  As Tribal Chairman, he has also represented the Tribe on the Louisiana Coastal Tribes Coalition, where he was selected Chairman, and served as the vessel coordinator for the response efforts in Pointe-au-Chien after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.  His first language is Indian French, and he is committed to maintaining the language and culture of the Tribe.  Under his leadership, the Tribe opened a tribal building in 2014. 

Donald Dardar

 

Second Chairperson

Second Chairman Donald Dardar was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  As soon as he was old enough to work, Donald began fishing and trapping with his father.  He has been a commercial fisherman all of his life.  Donald has served as the Second Chairman since 1999.  He represents the Tribe on the First People's Conservation Council and on the Gulf Organized Fisheries in Solidarity and Hope (GO FISH).  His first language is Indian French.  He is very active in cultural preservation efforts, including the maintenance and preservation of sacred sites and burial mounds. 

Melissa Verdin

 

Treasurer

Treasurer Melissa Verdin was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  She is a graduate of South Terrebonne High School and has a degree in accounting.  In addition to serving as the Tribe's Treasurer since 1999, she is an accountant for a major corporation in Terrebonne Parish. 

Michelle Matherne

 

Secretary

Secretary Michelle Matherne was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  She is a graduate of South Terrebonne High School and has been a paraprofessional for the Indian Education Program in Terrebonne Parish for over twenty years.  She is committed to improving the educational opportunities for Native American children and serves on the Tribe's Culture Camp Committee.  In addition to her work in education, she is a commercial fisherman.  She has served as the Tribal Secretary since 2001.  Her first language is Indian French.

Missy  Billiot Viguerie

Melissa Billiot Viguerie was raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  She graduated from South Terrebonne High School and earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and a Masters Degree in Psychological Counseling from Nicholls State University.  She served as the Project Director of the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe’s Cultural Preservation Project, where she oversaw the collection of oral history records and archival documents for the Tribe.  She served as a Tribal Monitor of the shoreline assessment after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  Her first language is Indian French.  Melissa serves on the Relief, Culture Camp, and Membership Committess.

Mary "Tuddy" Verdin

Mary "Tuddy" Verdin was first elected to Tribal Council in 2017.  She recently retired from teaching.  Mary is a graduate of H.L. Bourgeois High School and Nicholls State University.  She has been active on the culture camp and membership committees, and likes to work with the youth on making garfish earrings.  Mary (Tuddy) is married to Rodney Verdin.  Mary and Rodney have 5 children and 11 grandchildren.  Mary enjoys traveling and spending time with family members..

Earl Billiot

Councilman Earl Billiot was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  Earl continues to hunt and fish as his forefathers and earns his living as a commercial fisherman.  He has served on the Council since the early 2000s. Earl is a member of the Social Committee, responsible for organizing biannual events for tribal members.  He is also supportive of maintaining traditional ecological knowledge.  His first language is Indian French. 

Eugene Billiot

Councilman Eugene Billiot was born and raised in Montegut but has always maintained a close connection with his relatives living in Pointe-au-Chien.  Eugene attended the Indian school in Montegut.  He started fishing at an early age and worked as a commercial fisherman.  His first language is Indian French.

Jake Billiot

Councilman Jake Billiot aka Jacques was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  Jake began fishing when he was 11 years old with Mr. Samuel Dardar, Sr.  He bought his first crab boat at the age of 12 and bought his first trawl boat at 15.  He has spent his life hunting, fishing, and trapping like his ancestors.  He has served on the Council since early the 1990s and has been active in efforts to maintain, protect, and preserve the land for the Pointe-au-Chien Indians.  His first language is Indian French.

Basile Dardar

Councilman Basile "Babaz" Dardar was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  As a young boy, he began fishing with his father and relatives, ultimately becoming an expert hunter, fisher, and trapper.  Basile is knowledgeable of the traditional tribal lands and seeks to maintain and protect the land for future generations.  Basile has been involved in tribal leadership since the Tribe formalized its Constitution in the 1990s.  He serves on the Tribe's Social Committee and Relief Committee.  His first language is Indian French.

Angele Verdin Black 

 Angele Verdin Black served one term on the tribal council from 2009 to 2011 and was reelected in 2019. She worked for 15 years at a local tax office assisting clients with tax preparation and related products and services. She currently serves as the Resource Specialist for the Terrebonne Parish Indian Education Program, a position that allows her to preserve and create awareness about Native American culture and provide academic assistance for enrolled Native American students. She graduated from South Terrebonne High School, has a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Nicholls State University (NSU), and is currently pursuing a Master's in Education at NSU. Angele, her husband, and their two children reside in Montegut, LA. 

Christine Verdin

Councilwoman Christine Verdin was born and raised in Pointe-au-Chien.  She is a graduate of South Terrebonne and received her Bachelor of Arts in Education and Masters in Early Childhood and Administration from Nicholls State University.  She is a Master Teacher at Pointe-aux-Chenes Elementary and Montegut Elementary.  Christine has served as the Tribe's delegate to the National Congress of American Indians.  In 2010, she advocated for a resolution to support coordination with state recognized tribes in responding to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill at NCAI.  She has also highlighted the Tribe's issues before the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.  Her first language is Indian French, and she hopes to open an immersion school for children to maintain the language.

Oral History Committee - The Oral History Committee conducts, translates, and transcribes oral hisotry interviews.

Membership Committee - The Membership Committee reviews membership applications and forwards recommendations to the Council. The Membership Committee works with the Tribal Secretary to ensure that the membership roll is current.
