Before that, he spent 14 years at Time Inc., first as a feature writer for Money, and as a writer for Ttime and an editor and writer for Fortune. At Time, Mr. Gandel was the lead author of Time.com's Curious Capitalist economics blog. After joining Fortune, Mr. Gandel helped redesign the magazine's website, led Fortune's finance coverage, and rose to the title of assistant managing editor.
Mr. Gandel's work has been recognized by a number of journalism organizations. In 2016, he won SABEW's Best in Business award for his coverage of Wells Fargo. Mr. Gandel received the Excellence in Financial Journalism award in 2008 for his coverage of the housing bubble. He also is the only reporter to ever win a Henry R. Luce Award four years in a row.
Mr. Gandel attended Washington University where he graduated cum laude with a double major in English and economics. He also studied at the London School of Economics, and taught journalism as an adjunct professor at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.
Mr. Gandel lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children.
