To put a cap on Halloween weekend, a black cat ran onto the field during the second quarter of the Giants’ Monday night game against the Dallas Cowboys, suspending the game and dodging security guards with ease.
With the Giants up 9-3, the cat ran out of one of a tunnel towards midfield, circled back and ran into the end zone, stepped up toward the stands, and then climbed back down and skittered off up a tunnel and out.
The cat showed the kind of speed and elusiveness that should warrant a second look from Giants GM Dave Gettleman as a potential backup to Saquon Barkley.
Barkley unsurprisingly remarked that seeing a cat on the field was “a first” for him, but did not see it as a bad omen.
“No, I’m not superstitious. No, not at all. It didn’t bother me. The only thing that I didn’t like about it was we were going and it stopped us a little bit,” Barkley said. “But I think we still scored on that drive, I’m not 100 percent sure.”
Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was initially worried that the cat was going to spell doom for the Cowboys.
“The first thing that crossed my mind was like (expletive) we got bad luck, but no it just turned on them,” Lawrence said. “I was like man the game over. If a black cat runs on the damn field on Monday Night Football you might as well call it quits bro. Y’all luck is terrible so it was just bad luck and that was it and I hate cats. They better get this cat before it gets to me.”
MetLife Stadium released a statement that “the black cat ran off the field and disappeared under a seating section. Once we locate and safely capture the cat, we will take it to a veterinarian for examination.”
The cat is believed to be a stray living in the stadium, which means he’s desperate to see a win. The Giants fell to 1-4 at home and 2-7 on the season, which puts them in the litter box of the NFC.
