The Mets added to their stable of bat-first depth at the infield and outfield corners, signing Matt Adams to a minor league deal. Adams was also invited to spring training.
Adams, 31, has played for the Cardinals, Braves and Nationals across eight seasons, hitting 20 home runs and driving in 56 runs for the defending champions.
Despite Adams’ power — he has hit at least 15 home runs in six of his eight years in the big leagues — his lack of contact approach (career-low .226 average in 2019) resulted in an 86 wRC+, meaning his offense was 14% worse than the league average per Fangraphs.
However, Adams is a year removed from a 107 wRC+ — a bounce back could make him a valuable addition off the bench.
The Mets have reigning rookie of the year and home run champ Pete Alonso and Dom Smith ahead of Adams at first, along with Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo and J.D. Davis slotted ahead of him in the corner outfield spots.
