The Secret Service’s first account of how one of its agents shot dead a dog in Brooklyn was as wrong as a fake $100 bill.
The counterfeit-busting government agency admitted Tuesday that the dog shot dead by an off-duty agent was on a leash after all.
The feds initially said the female Belgian Shepherd, named Bambi was not leashed when she was shot on Caton Place in Windsor Terrace at 9:45 p.m. Monday — despite pictures showing otherwise.
On Monday, the agency issued a statement that said: “An off duty Secret Service employee was involved in the shooting of an unleashed dog in Brooklyn, NY this evening.”
But on Tuesday, the Service said the Shepherd was leashed but “unsecured from its owner who was not present.”
The dog started barking, and the startled agent pulled out his gun and shot her, police said.
“She scared a cop who was walking home,” the pooch’s visibly shaken owner said as he covered his eyes after the gunfire. “He shot her and she’s dead.”
The agent told detectives the animal charged at him, police said.
Two witnesses who spoke to the Daily News, including the stable master at nearby Kensington Stables, saw a man walking with the dog before the shooting.
“There was a guy and a girl and another guy,” said Walker Blankinship, 51, who was across the street. “A gunshot went off, just one. The (dog’s owner) was cursing and ranting at the other man, ‘I can’t f—ing believe you let the gun go off.'”
Votive candles, flowers and a rest in peace sign are left at the site where Bambi died.
Trisha Perry left a bouquet while walking by the scene with her black 120 pound Labrador, Bandit.
“What a horrible thing for the dog owner to witness,” Perry said.”We are out here because we want the owners to know we are thinking of them. It sounds like a overreaction.”
“The owner is a good guy and she’s a good dog,” said a 31-year-old neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous. “Whenever I see her, she’s on a leash. I don’t know how someone can shoot a dog.”
