A Rikers Island inmate died Friday at the jail complex’s Anna M. Kross Center, the Daily News has learned.
An officer found 27-year-old Christopher Cruz unresponsive in his cell at around 9:30 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 10:14 a.m.
Medical staff responded to the scene, but Cruz could not be saved.
“The death of any person in our custody is a tragic loss and we send our condolences to Christopher Cruz’s family at this difficult time,” said Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Peter Thorne.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s death were unclear, and the incident is under investigation.
