Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen fires back at Zack Wheeler, says something dumb

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen fired back at former Met-turned-Phillie Zack Wheeler, a day after Wheeler threw a subtle jab at the Mets that all baseball fans will understand.

Asked by the NY Post whether he reached out to the Mets after receiving his offer from the Phillies, Wheeler said this:

“It was basically just crickets when I did.”

He continued by saying he wasn’t surprised.

“Because it’s them,” Wheeler said. “It’s how they roll.”

Second-year GM Van Wagenen responded Friday.

That’s certainly a take. To be clear, Zack Wheeler and his agent are responsible for getting Zack Wheeler $118 million. Not BVW and not the Mets.

Did Wheeler improve as a Met? Sure. Were the Mets more instrumental in that improvement than Wheeler’s right arm or natural talent? Come on, son.

It is true that Wheeler was not the best version of himself throughout all five years with the Mets. Really, he has been an ace-type for only those two half-seasons (the second halves of 2018 and 2019) and was more of a No. 3 or No. 4 starter the rest of the time with the Mets. That part of BVW’s comment is hard to dispute.

This adds more juice to the Phillies-Mets rivalry. Will Wheeler be booed when he returns to Citi Field? If he is, it would be more so because he signed with the Phillies than because of that little shot at the Mets.

Hell, even Mets fans would probably agree with what he said.
