Smart Start Fall Institute

For K-8 educators of participating Smart Start Districts

Hosted by Monroe One BOCES - Facilitated by NYSCATE - Funded by NYSED Smart Start Grant 4 Day Fall Institute (2 in person/2 asynchronous online) will immerse attendees in the NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards as well as the NYS Social Emotional Learning Benchmarks. Educators will experience the standards at work and facilitators will model the standards and instructional technology integration throughout the 4 days while using research artifacts such as articles, videos, and learning experience to increase the knowledge of the attendees. Overarching NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards will be embedded throughout the entire experience are Digital Literacy Standards and Impact of Computing Standards. Educators will adapt and/or create new lessons/units tied to the learning throughout the cohort to integrate the NYS CSDF Standards and create a portfolio.

Activities Include:

  • Day #1 - Overview of standards and the "Why", Scope of the Year Ahead, Getting Organized, and Concept Exploration.
  • Online Activities - TPACK & PIC-RAT Platform exploration, Enrichment activities to further immerse attendees in the concept areas and authentic standard alignment to curriculum.
  • Day #2 - Immersion in all concept areas through unpacking and developing examples of the standards in action and begin adapting lessons. Begin lesson adaptation.
  • Online Activities - Enrichment activities and Exploring Robotics and Unplugged activities and the authentic connection with the standards and content standards.
