MSUM Announces 2019 Dragon Sports Hall of Fame Class

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead athletic department has announced the 2019 Dragon Sports Hall of Fame inductees. Nine individuals and one team were selected to be honored.

The individuals and team will be honored at the Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Oct. 4  at Comstock Memorial Ballroom on the MSUM campus with the meal beginning at 5:30 p.m.. One individual, track and field athlete Jeff Meland, will be inducted in the 2020 class because of a conflict. "This year's Dragon Sports Hall of Fame class spans five decades of Dragons whose accomplishments speak for themselves," MSUM athletic director Doug Peters said. "The committee did a great job of selecting a fantastic class."

2019 Dragon Sports Hall of Fame Honorees
Joey Andreasen (Wrestling 1992-94)

Two-time All-American at 126 pounds in 1993 and 1994, placing sixth at nationals both years…NSIC Champion in 1994…named team's Most Valuable Wrestler in 1994.

Jennifer Hensel (Women's Track and Field 2005-08)
Two-time national champion in pole vault, winning outdoors in 2007 (12-9) and 2008 (school record 13-2 1/4) to become MSUM's first pole vault individual national champ.… six-time All-American in pole vault…current school record holder indoors (13-2 1/4) and outdoors (13-7 1/4)….second fastest 55-meter dash in school history (7.18)…Frazee native.

Rod McClendon (Men's Track and Field 1979-82)
NIC Outdoor Champ in long jump (22-11 1/2) and triple jump (47-5) in 1981…national qualifier in triple jump…school record holder in the outdoors triple jump (50-8 1/4)…placed in NIC meets seven times in first three seasons at MSU.

Bismarck native who starred in the javelin…was All-American javelin thrower, placed fourth at NAIA Outdoor in 1984 with a toss of 217-11.

Mike Polomny (Men's Basketball, 1988-93)

Second all-time leading scorer in Dragon history with 1,946 points…holds single-game record with 20 field goals made in a game…scored the second-most points in a game in school history (53) vs. UW-River Falls in 1990…all-time leader in field goals made (772), fifth in rebounds (759), tied for fifth with 127 steals…All-NSIC selection in 1992-93.

Mike Reem (Football, 1968-71)
Four-year letterwinner at linebacker…elected co-captain as a senior in 1973…second team Academic All-American as a senior; first Dragon to win the award…named to All-NIC team as a senior…presented Dr. Geib Award as Most Dedicated Player, as well…credited with 48 tackles as a junior with two interceptions…three-year starter at outside linebacker and All Conference...Academic All-American second team in 1973...team captain.

Six-time All-American in career, four in high jump, one in 800 and one in heptathlon...20-time NSIC Champion and two-time NSIC Athlete of the Year...2008 DI Outdoor Track and Field North Central Region Field Athlete of the Year...2008 and 2009 MSUM Female Athlete of the Year)...currently on the top 10 list for 13 events at MSUM...Maple Lake native holds school indoor records in 600 meters (1:33.85), 800 meters (2:12.14), pentathlon (3,643)..second-best outdoor in heptathlon (4,755)…second-best high jump in school history outdoors (5-9 1/4)...Academic All-American.

Standout in track and field and basketball at MSUM…All-American outdoors in the high jump in 2006…key part of 2006 NSIC Outdoor Championship team…school record holder in triple jump outdoors (39-4 3/4)…NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2005 and 2006….2005 MSUM Female Athlete of the Year…named 2007 NSIC Willis R. Kelly Scholar-Athlete Award Winner…won eight NSIC titles in track nd field career, including long jump and triple jump three times each…Academic All-American….part of 2004-05 MSUM Women's Basketball NSIC Championship Team…ranks in top 10 in school history in indoor triple jump (third), outdoor high jump (fourth), 55-meter hurdles (sixth), long jump (sixth)…numerous academic honors.

(voted in for 2018, unable to attend last year so will be inducted in 2019)
All-time leading scorer in Dragon history with 2,015 points, only Dragon basketball player to surpass 2,000 career points scored…four-time All-NSIC selection…third all-time in field goals made (704) and second in free throws made (459)…third all-time in assists (339), tied for fifth with 127 steals.

1979 Men's Track and Field Team
40th anniversary of NIC Outdoor Championship team…also finished runner-up indoors…Ron Graham (NAIA two-mile indoors) and Dave Bergstrom (NCAA D2 high jump outdoors) were national champions...Bergstrom also was NAIA runner-up indoors in high jump...Bob Beeson (1,000), Jim Fay (880) and Bergstrom (high jump) were indoor All-Americans…indoor conference champions were Jim Fay (800), Bob Beeson (1,000), Dale Tucker (55), Dave Bergstrom (high jump), Ben Basuto (long jump)…outdoor champions were Bergstrom (high jump), Tucker (110 hurdles), Dave Robley (pole vault), Stu Fox (400 hurdles) and 1,600 relay.
