Black History Month

  • BHM Kick-off – Black at Marquette Lunch - February 1th

      •  Join the Center for Engagement and Inclusion and the Black Faculty and Staff Employee Resource Group for the annual Black History Month Kick Off Luncheon with food and community. For any question please contact cei@marquette.edu

  • February 7, 2024 – National Black and African American HIV and AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD)
    • Medium: Tabling
    • Location: AMU 1st Floor – Between the Brew & the LGBTQ+ RC
    • Time: 10:00 AM – 3 PM
    • Tabling staff will be highlighting the critical need to increase awareness and mobilize community involvement in combatting HIV among Black/African American people. Staff will also share the ways that Marquette faculty are supporting continuing HIV/AIDS research and opportunities to get involved in prevention work in the city of Milwaukee.

    • Get ready to go crazy at Wildin' Out, the wildest event of the year packed with non-stop fun, insane challenges, and epic surprises.

  • Black Love Photobooth Tabling – Feb 14th-16th 10am-4pm AMU 2nd Floor 
    • Come to AMU second floor to take picture to showcase your Black Love
  • BIPOC & LGBTQ+ Workshop: “Exploring the &”
    • Date, Time, & Location: 2/13/24, 3-4 PM, Holthusen Hall
    • A gathering for students identifying as BIPOC and LGBTQ+, questioning, and allied students to bring students together in honor of Black History Month. To celebrate overlapping communities, make new connections, and reflect on strengths and struggles. A “hearts and craft” activity will accompany discussion.
  • Soulful Serenity: Nurturing Black Self-Love through Meditation
    • Date, Time, & Location: 2/15/24, 5-6 PM, Henke Lounge
    • In honor of Black Love Week, students will learn how to quiet their inner critic and embrace self-love and Black excellence through self-compassion, affirmations, and meditation with CC’s therapist, Marie Humes, LPC-IT. Come as you are. No previous experience in meditation or mindfulness is required. Self-care bags provided.
  •  BHM Tea with the RC February 21

    •   Purpose: This event is intended to give participants a taste of soul through desserts. Come for food and conversation as we talk about soul food and its connection to the Black community. 
  • Black Faculty and Staff Lunch and Reflection
    • Thu, Feb. 29, 12 to 1 p.m.
    • As part of our celebration of Black History Month, we would like to invite you to a lunchtime gathering for Black Faculty & Staff. This event is an informal gathering to connect with colleagues and friends and celebrate the beauty and depth of our shared belonging, heritage, and Ubuntu.

    • This workshop, led by counseling center therapist, Kentrell Washington APSW, is for Black Boys to come and discuss what Black Boy Joy means for them. It is also to engage the topic of Black Boy Joy as it intersects with mental health and Black masculinity. Self-care bags provided.

    • January 19 - May 12, 2024
    • Haggerty Museum of Art 
    • Bill Tennessen is a self-taught photographer who began contributing photographs to the Milwaukee Community Journal, Wisconsin’s largest African American newspaper, in 1981. Dynamic Range: Photographs by Bill Tennessen includes 50 photographs by Tennessen that highlight Milwaukee’s Black community from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Black Women Rock Brunch - March 17th

Join us Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 12pm to 3pm in the Alumni Memorial Union Ballrooms for a memorable experience and the opportunity to honor the strength, resilience, and achievements of Black women. This empowering event is a platform to recognize their contributions and uplift their voices. We will also be highlighting Black owned businesses. Register here.

Stop by the second floor of the Alumni Memorial Center (AMU) to checkout a display highlighting the connections between the LGBTQ+ Community, Womynhood, and Flowers. Take a stroll through this garden-like experience and pick-up a sweet treat while they are in stock!

Denim Drive – March 19th

In support of the Denim Day Fashion Show taking place on April 24, 2024, the LGBTQ+ Resource Center (RC) is hosting a Denim Drive! Please donate any denim articles of clothing or scrap fabric in the bin’s set out in the RC (AMU 140) this day. Denim donated will be used by participants in the fashion show to create their garments to wear down the runway to honor the history of Denim Day and body autonomy.

Soup with Substance: History of Women at Marquette – March 20th

Join us March 20th, in AMU 227 at 12pm for a discussion on the history of women at Marquette over soup and bread.

Femme and Womyn Leaders Headshots - March 21st- Career Center

Need a headshot for your professional website, portfolio, or business? Take advantage of this opportunity hosted by the Career Center team to take your professional photos for free! There will be a group walking over to the Career Center for photos from the Center for Engagement and Inclusion (AMU 140) at 12:00 PM leaving and another group walking over from the LGBTQ+ Resource Center (AMU 111) at 2:00 PM if you want to walk over with a group.

Tea in the RC - March 22nd

The LGBTQ+ Resource Center is having a Tea in the RC on March 22nd from 2pm-4pm in AMU 140 as a part of Women's Appreciation Week! This event will be highlighting a prominent lesbian woman who has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion. There will be light snacks and refreshments provided and all are welcome!
