Obituary

Kurt Andre Fraser was born on Wednesday, June 15, 1977 in Anna Regina, Guyana to Fitz Herbert (Clyde) Fraser and Doris Monica Fraser (nee Philander). Kurt was the youngest of the Frasers’ biological children, and was viewed as one of the cutest babies, by one of his sisters.

Kurt immigrated to the United States with his four siblings and his mother in 1982 to join his dad in New York. As a child, Kurt had a predilection to using hammers and breaking and rebuilding things. His mom thought that he would either become an engineer or an orthopedic surgeon.

Kurt had a strong belief in God, accepting Him as his lord and savior as a young boy. During his childhood and adolescent years, Kurt attended Bedford Zion Church of the Nazarene in Brooklyn with his siblings, and became a member of the church. He actively participated in the church’s Sunday School and Youth activities. He would often visit Bedford Zion when visiting New York.

Kurt excelled academically, something that came effortlessly to him, as he would often not study for exams and would do well, to the chagrin of his older siblings and parents. He was accepted to Philippa Schuyler Middle School, for the gifted and talented, and passed the entrance exam for the highly competitive Brooklyn Technical High School. He played football at Brooklyn Tech and was affectionately known as “Kurt the Hurt, and Big Frase.” He chose to major in Civil Engineering during his last two years of Tech and received a scholarship to Northeastern University. He continued as a student-athlete at Northeastern and went on to obtain both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering. He later obtained his license as a professional engineer (PE) and worked for the town of Brookline, MA before creating his own company, Fraser Poly-Engineering Services, in 2009.

While at Northeastern, Kurt met Dawn Dorsey, whom he later married. Dawn and Kurt have been married for 23 years, and have three sons, Omar, Nathan and Samuel. His older sons inherited their dad’s love for football and played football in high school and college. He held the word of God in his heart, and lived an upright life, He trained his children in the way they should go and also led by example. He used his talents and gifts to further the Kingdom of God by empowering people to be the “head and not the tail, and to be the lender not the borrower,” as the Bible states.

Kurt and Dawn bought a two-bedroom cape in Milton Massachusetts, which Kurt tore down and built a much larger, beautiful Victorian home, and served as engineer and contractor to successfully complete the project. Kurt’s company (Fraser Poly-engineering Services) was a source of great pride for him. He worked tirelessly to make the company a success and likely had the dream to pass it on to his sons, as they worked with him on various projects. He also used his company to give back to the community. He was dedicated to helping level the workforce by hiring minority employees and accepting projects that would benefit those who are often disenfranchised and underrepresented. Kurt also tried to serve those who were in need.

Kurt loved life, and would often travel to various places. His favorite destination was Martha’s Vineyard, and he often tried to encourage his siblings to get together with him to purchase a vacation property for the family. Kurt also enjoyed fishing and would often share pictures of his catch with the rest of the family. He was also a master at trivia, and could have easily been a Jeopardy participant. One of his favorite things to do was to challenge us to a game of Jeopardy as we watched the show together. His love and competence of History were often evident during these sessions, and he often won.

His sarcastic humor, including his wit, was easily noted in the long family group chats. It has not been uncommon to have over one hundred text messages between Kurt and his brothers in the group chat, which included arguments about history and politics.

Kurt never lacked the confidence that something could not be achieved. If he dreamed it, then he could achieve it. Kurt wanted his boys to have the same confidence, and would often ask, “are we raising men?” Indeed, he has raised men. He was a disciplinarian, who led by example and sought God’s will for his family. Kurt was a devoted husband, father, brother, son and friend. His compassion for others extended to others outside of the family, and he was noted for his unwavering generosity. Kurt will be greatly missed for being such a wonderful person.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn, his sons, Omar, Nathan and Samuel; his parents, Fitz Herbert (Clyde) Fraser and Doris Monica Fraser; his siblings, Kwasi Fraser (Angie) of Purcellville, VA, Marilyn Fraser of Queens Village, NY, Gail Fraser-Farmer of Islip, NY and Clyde Fraser of Dover, NJ; and numerous relatives and friends.
