Road trip with several Chundawat Lab students on route to the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on ‘Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes (CAZymes) for Glycan Conversions’! This years theme is CAZymes for Environmental Sustainability and Human Health. Here is a quick summary of what some of our lab members will be presenting at this years GRC meeting. Antonio De Chellis will present a poster at this meeting on computational design & characterization of supercharged cellulases for more efficient conversion of lignocellulose to sugars for biofuels production. Contributions from Bhargava Nemmaru & Deanne Sammond. Preprint to be submitted to BioRxiv! Dharanidaran Jayachandran will present a poster on novel protein probe design to enable real-imaging of cellulose synthesis & fibril assembly by plant protoplasts into cell walls. Contributions from Hyun Huh, Eric Lam, and Sang-Hyuk Lee. Special thanks to Mohammad Irfan, Junhong Sun for their critical assistance on this project as well. Manuscript to be submitted for review soon! Mohit Kumar and Srividya Vyjayanthi T will present a poster on directed evolution/rational engineering of glycosynthase enzymes, experimental characterization, and structural modeling using advanced QM/MM methods to ultimately enable bespoke human milk oligosaccharides synthesis. Contributions from Tucker Burgin and Chandra Kanth Bandi. Special thanks to Heather B. Mayes (& Tucker) for collaborating with my group to kickstart this project. Manuscript under preparation for submission later this fall! Lastly, I will present an invited talk at the GRC session ‘Visualizing CAZyme-Substrate Interactions’ highlighting key advances being made by our group on visualizing cellulose biosynthesis, microfibril assembly, & cell wall degradation. Contributions from Dharanidaran Jayachandran, Hyun Huh, Junhong Sun, Mohammad Irfan, Markus Hackl, PhD, Bhargava Nemmaru, Antonio De Chellis, Jenna Douglass, Sonia Brady, Mark Hilton, Ph.D., and Maddie Johnson. Special thanks to Sang-Hyuk Lee’s & Eric Lam’s Lab at Rutgers, as well as Matthew Lang’s Lab at Vanderbilt, for fantastic collaborations over the years to make this exciting research talk possible. Special thanks to GRC meeting chairs Tina Jeoh and Nicole Koropatkin for the kind invitation to the present at the meeting this year. Also, thanks to all sponsors (U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), Rutgers University for support). Looking forward to engaging with the Gordon Conference community after 4 years! Check out the GRC webpage for more details on other exciting presentations to be held at the GRC meeting on ‘Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes for Glycan Conversions’ this year. https://lnkd.in/erbnfZBr #glycotime #CAZy #enzymes #proteinengineering #glycans #biophysics #bioenergy #environmentalsustainability #humanhealth
