The importance of discussing racism

- We live in an interconnected society, language, culture, traditions, celebrations. As an interconnected society, it's important for us to talk about racism. We're each coming to this course with our unique experiences, perspectives, understandings, and language. But it's important to have discussions about racism because racism impacts everyone directly or indirectly. It affects our families, our communities, our workplaces, us as individuals. I want to share the approach of this course with you. The focus is US-based, but racism is a global issue. This conversation is a starting point. This course won't solve everything but it will introduce you to new concepts and strategies about racism. It will be uncomfortable and challenge your thinking and what you may know. We want to be part of a solution to have more holistic conversations. We're giving you tools and meeting you where you are. Hi, I'm Dr. Christina Greer, I'm a Professor of Political Science and an author of a book called, "Black Ethnics, Race, Immigration and the Pursuit of the American Dream." I specialize in race in American politics and having grown up in America, I've had interactions with all different types of people and at times I've been an ally or I've really needed one. I'll share my experiences as a black person in America. We'll also walk through how racism has impacted your life historically, implicitly and explicitly. We'll look at how to be mindful about language, how to begin a conversation and how to have productive conversations. We'll explore how to be better allies and accomplices and we'll give you strategies for when situations happen and a resource guide to help you continue your learning. Thank you for being here and for being on this journey with me.
