USAID Agriculture Growing Rural Opportunities Activity (AGRO)

About us

USAID Agriculture Growing Rural Opportunities Activity (AGRO) is financed by USAID and implemented by Chemonics International. The purpose of USAID AGRO is to accelerate the economic development of rural Ukrainian communities with the greatest need through a better governed agricultural sector that encourages more productive, modern, and profitable agricultural MSMEs that are successfully integrated into competitive markets both in Ukraine and internationally. Target Value Chains: • Fruit, vegetables, and berries • Dairy and meat • Fish and aquaculture • Confectionary • Poultry meat and eggs: chicken, duck, goose • Grains, sunflower seed and oil, sugar AGRO is confronting the consequences of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by adapting activities to restore the economic activity of agricultural producers, rebuild supply chains, and ensure food security in Ukraine. We respond to immediate needs focusing on food security and production support; plan activities for early market recovery; and aim to rebuild long-term, devising comprehensive activities depending on various post-war scenarios. Most of our initiatives are available to MSMEs all over Ukraine. Currently AGRO reaches out to over 6,000 farmers, accounting for roughly 12% of the total number of registered agricultural enterprises in Ukraine. The Agriculture Resilience Initiative (AGRI) – Ukraine, launched by USAID, aims to bolster Ukrainian agricultural production and exports to help alleviate the global food security crisis. AGRO contributes to AGRI-Ukraine through the implementation of projects on MSME access to grain drying, storage, processing facilities, laboratory and advisory services as well as improved access to inputs and finance, which will enable farmers to store, profitably sell their harvest, and continue operations with spring sowing. 🚜 With disrupted logistics, fluctuating grain prices, and increased input costs, Ukrainian farmers are exploring every opportunity to sustain farming operations. In autumn 2023 and winter 2024, as part of the wider 𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐃 #AGRI_Ukraine initiative, USAID AGRO Ukraine provided urea fertilizer to 7621 farmers to help them nourish winter crops. 🌱 👨🌾 And while this tangible support is vital, one of its beneficiaries, Serhii, a farmer turned vlogger from Kirovohrad Oblast, illustrates how the sense of community provides intangible support by keeping the morale high. 👏 🎥 On his YouTube channel, Serhii shares regular updates and has recently posted about applying the urea received from USAID AGRO Ukraine, to fertilize winter wheat. Overall, in 2023 and early 2024, 𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐃 𝐀𝐆𝐑𝐈-𝐔𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 supplied seeds and fertilizers to 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐔𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬, providing inputs for fieldwork across more than 460,000 hectares to cultivate at least 2 million tons of grain.

🌾 Drying and storing grain, for export or further processing into food and feed, has been a challenge for smallholder farmers, especially since the start of the full-scale war: experts estimate, that Russia's attacks have caused a 19.5% reduction in Ukraine's grain storage capacity. USAID AGRO Ukraine has partnered with 11 elevator companies to cater to at least 990 small and medium agribusinesses like 'Snow Milk' farm. Drying and storing grain at nearby grain elevators is a cost-efficient solution for farmers who don't own storage and drying facilities. #success_stories #AGRI_Ukraine

👩🌾 Tetyana Matviyets, a retired agronomist from Velyka Bakta, Berehove district in Zakarpattia, tends to her family’s 4-hectare garden by herself these days. Her garden is a cornucopia of produce, from apples, plums, cherries, peaches and pears, to nuts and berries. The family have carefully gathered the varieties, most of the Ukrainian selection, from various parts of Ukraine. 🍒 🍐 🍎 Tetyana gladly shares her knowledge with fellow gardeners through community service. She is also a member of a local cooperative. With her husband often away for work and her son in the military, Tetyana handles most of the garden work and processes the harvest into dried fruits, jams, and juices. The remaining fresh produce is sold through the cooperative’s consignments. 🍑 Recently, Tetyana participated in a training session at the Dary Berehivshchyny cooperative on using electric pruners for pruning fruit trees. This training is part of the USAID AGRO Ukraine initiative to provide labor-saving equipment to help automate tasks for women and men from vulnerable groups working in orchards.
