About us

SSE Renewables is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy generation, headquartered in the UK and Ireland, with a growing presence internationally. Part of the SSE plc group, we have an operational portfolio of around 4GW of onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro generation, with a secured future project pipeline of over 15GW in development. Our operational portfolio comprises nearly 2GW of onshore wind capacity, almost 0.5GW of offshore wind capacity, and almost 1.5GW of flexible hydro power and pumped storage capacity. These generation assets produce around 10TWh of renewable power each year. We're committed to delivering the green energy the world needs now and in the future. Our 15GW+ construction and development pipeline includes 3.8GW of onshore wind, 1.3GW of pumped storage, 1.2GW of solar energy and battery storage, and 8.8GW of offshore wind energy - the largest offshore development pipeline in the UK and Ireland. We know offshore wind will be the backbone of a net zero power system and that's why we're building more offshore wind than any other company in the world right now. This includes the world's largest offshore wind farm, the 3.6GW Dogger Bank project in the North Sea, and the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, the 1.1GW Seagreen project off the Scottish coast. We're a team of around 1,500 renewable energy professionals based across the UK, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Japan and the USA. We've honed our skills through over 20 years of delivering world-leading projects with expertise in project design and optimisation, consenting and stakeholder engagement, financing, procurement, construction, and operations.

Battery storage will play a key role in unlocking the path to #netzero because of its ability to hold and release energy when most needed. 🔋 We recently celebrated the opening of our first battery energy storage system (BESS) at Salisbury which will be capable of storing up to 100MWh of energy for flexible dispatch. When called upon, the system can operate for up to two hours at a time at times of peak demand. ⚡ In addition to Salisbury, we are currently constructing a 150MW battery project in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, which is due to complete in the first half of next year, and a 320MW battery project in Monk Fryston, North Yorkshire, which will be able to deliver flexible energy at scale once completed in up to two years’ time. We spoke to Member of Parliament for Salisbury, John Glen, about the important role this project will play in our energy mix, and we caught up with our Head of Construction for Solar & Battery, Alun Robinson about why our future Solar and Battery projects are benefiting from the leanings taken from this project. 🌍To mark #EarthDay we’ve launched a partnership with Wicklow Sustainable Energy Community and Wicklow County Council ahead of #WicklowEnergyAwarenessDay2024 in June. Through our Arklow Bank Wind Park 2 Sponsorship Fund, we have supported a variety of #community sustainability initiatives close to the development site. We're proud to be lead sponsor for this year's Wicklow Energy Awareness Day, which aims to support community members in improving the #energyefficiency of their homes and businesses, with a host of exhibition stands providing helpful information. Deirdre Keogh, Community Engagement Manager, said: “Earth Day reminds us of the importance of caring for our climate and supporting awareness around sustainability of our county, country and globally. “The benefits that renewable energy can bring to reducing carbon emissions and helping to safeguard the planet for future generations cannot be understated. Raising awareness at events like the Co. Wicklow Energy Awareness Day in June, helps to inform everyone about ways we can individually and collectively as communities, help to reduce our carbon footprint and support positive initiatives that promote sustainability in our county." Members of our Seagreen team recently hosted a visit for the Montrose Coastguard Rescue Officers at the projects Operations and Maintenance base at Montrose Port. The visit included a trip to the Marine Control Centre where the team got to see first-hand how Scotland’s largest and the world’s deepest fixed bottom wind farm is co-ordinated and controlled safely. 🖥 This was followed by a tour on the purpose-built Service Operations Vessel, the Edda Brint, with Captain Grant taking the time to lead the tour around the vessel. 🚢 Alongside our JV partners, TotalEnergies, we’re always eager to host groups and visits like this as it allows us to build important and long-lasting relationships with the local community. 🤝 Read more below 👇

Our strategy is to lead the transition to a #netzero future through the world-class development, construction and operation of #renewable power assets. ⚡ Yellow River Wind Farm is a 29-turbine #onshore wind farm under construction in the Irish Midlands with an installed capacity in excess of 101MW and once operational, it will be capable of generating enough green energy to power over 66,000 homes and offset 66,000 metric tonnes of carbon annually. 🏡 It has been huge team effort since construction commenced on the wind farm in October 2022. We have worked closely with contractors including Farrans Construction, Suir Engineering, and Nordex Group, who have all had fundamental roles in the project delivery to date. Port of Galway has also played a significant role in the delivery of Yellow River by taking deliveries of turbine components and storing them at the port before being transported to site. 🚛 We spoke to those involved about the scale of the project, the opportunities it has provided during the construction phase, and how the wind farm will contribute to Ireland’s renewable energy targets. 📈 Watch the video below to find out more 🎥

Today The Scottish Government have announced an update to its climate targets. There is no doubt Scotland has the natural resources and the skills to be a world leader in reducing emissions. But to get there needs action as well as ambition. We need to accelerate progress, in particular around consenting, where it still takes too long to get planning permission for clean energy projects in this country. SSE alone could invest more than £20bn in Scotland in the next decade. The quicker we can do this the faster the country will reduce emissions, strengthen energy security, and create thousands of good jobs. Last week Ralph T., director of offshore floating wind at our joint venture partner SSE Renewables, represented the Ossian project at the Recharge Floating Wind Forum digital roundtable. 🌐 The sessions showed significant ongoing support from key parts of the global floating offshore wind industry, in the context of a challenging few years for offshore wind. Some key takeaways from the day: 📈 New markets are continuing to develop but established markets are developing at different rates, based on the effectiveness of domestic policy and industrial strategy 🔋 There is a positive future for floating offshore wind, with it being seen a key global opportunity from early 2030s and beyond 👏 The industry has already achieved a significant milestone with a floating offshore wind project reaching final investment decision utilising full non-resource project finance, but the cost of capital remains a key driver of LCOE and the industry needs to work to reduce real and perceived investment risks Overall, the global floating offshore wind opportunity continues to show strong growth, but there remains a significant amount of work to do to deliver a growing pipeline of projects whilst maximising the economic, social and environmental benefits for FOW.
