Thank you Angela Davis for including Washington Technology Magnet teacher Kong Vang on this panel of educators and students talking about the importance of ethnic studies becoming a statewide requirement in Minnesota.
Listen to students who are already taking ethnic studies classes in high schools across Minnesota and educators who are teaching these courses. In 2026 these classes will be offered in all districts statewide. Today at the Coalition to Advance Future Student Success ESSER Summit, the "Investment to Impact" session featured Adam Kunz, Assistant Superintendent for Saint Paul Public Schools, and Andrew Strope, Deputy Superintendent for Indianapolis Public Schools, moderated by Beth Hawkins, Senior Writer and National Correspondent for The 74 Media. They discussed how their districts utilize ESSER funding to meet student needs. “We realized we had to make the most out of this incredible opportunity,” said Strope. In St. Paul they conducted multiple town halls to inform the community how ESSER funds were being utilized and said that “transparency” was important. Council Executive Director Raymond Hart and Roberto Rodriguez, Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, dsicussed how ESSER investments are still making a difference in education. “High dosage and high-quality tutoring is really paying off,” said Rodriguez. “We have to identify what works and continue to sustain it. There is an opportunity to think about innovation. We have the answers and we know what our kinds need to thrive. We have to carry that vision and determination forward.”

Nex Benedict is one of too many LGBTQIA+ students who should be alive today. A recent report reveals that school hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ students have doubled in recent years, rising even sharper in states with laws restricting LGBTQIA+ students' rights. At Saint Paul Public Schools, we work hard to create a safe and welcoming school environment that fosters positive self-esteem, acceptance and affirmation, respect for others, and academic success for all, especially our gender expansive students, families and staff members. We do this through our SPPS Gender Inclusion Policy, counselors and other staff who support students daily, school-based Gender and Sexuality Alliances, the Gender and Sexual Diversity Parent Advisory Council, and the work of the SPPS Out for Equity program. Please visit the Out for Equity website for upcoming events, celebrations, resources and ways to get involved at spps.org/outforequity. The SPPS Board of Education has begun developing plans to find the district’s next superintendent, which will include hiring an outside firm to assist with the search. An interim superintendent will be selected to support the transition until a new full-time leader is hired. Details about the transition timeline will be shared as soon as they are available. After several years of four-digit declines in student enrollment, Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is starting to see its PreK-12 enrollment stabilize in the 2023-24 school year. In Minnesota, official public school enrollment is based on Oct. 1 student counts. For SPPS, that number was 33,062 students in grades PreK-12 across the district’s 69 schools. This is compared to 33,110 students in the 2022-23 school year, a difference of only 48 students. “The progress we have made in stabilizing our enrollment this year did not happen by accident,” said Superintendent Joe Gothard, Ed.D. “As a district, SPPS has invested significant resources in providing our community with the educational options that families want and students need. This includes high-quality educational programs that respect and reflect the people we serve; and free, full-day pre-kindergarten at over 30 schools across the city.” Read more about this promising enrollment data in today's press release: https://lnkd.in/gBgPdmAp
