The OWA has hosted students from the Forestry Technician Program at Algonquin College for several years now, during their annual two-week placements each May. It is a great opportunity for the students to gain some real-world experience, and for us to get some important work done, like field data collection to calibrate and validate our private land forest inventory (derived from LiDAR). The OWA thanks this year's contingent of students and the faculty of Algonquin College for letting us be part of this wonderful program! Thanks also to our staff Sionaid Eggett and Ashley MacRae, for setting up an excellent and varied two week placement experience! Congratulations to Canadore College for achieving forest certification under the Eastern Ontario Model Forest group certificate! Great work by the OWA's Sustainable Forestry Coordinator Elliott Groen and Program Manager Glen Prevost, in helping to make this happen! Ontario Woodlot Association #forest #stewardship #sustainability #conservation #forestcertification #FSC #SFI
To celebrate Ontario Woodlands Appreciation Week, we are proud to announce that the forested land at our College Drive Campus has achieved two important forest certifications. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative certification ensures forests are committed to promoting forest-focused collaborations resulting in a world that values and benefits from sustainably managed forests. The Forest Stewardship Council certification confirms that our forest is managed in a way that conserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people, workers, and Indigenous Peoples and Communities. We are delighted to become the first campus in Canada to achieve either of these certifications! Through certification to SFI and FSC standards, we affirm our commitment to responsible forest management and are proud to act as an exemplar for other institutional and private landowners. We would like to thank our funders, Colleges and Institutes Canada | Collèges et instituts Canada, along with all collaborators, including Glen Prevost (Ontario Woodlot Association), Elliott Groen (Forest Gardener), and Chris Herbert (Mi6 Agency).
