Yesterday, the Newark Public Safety Collaborative convened its 27th Community Stakeholders meeting with over 47 attendees representing 40 community stakeholders, including CBOs, law enforcement, local and state leaders, and businesses, among others. Our discussion evolved around the importance of engaging youth in ongoing public safety efforts. As a community member mentioned, any programming efforts seeking to engage youth must incorporate youth voices. Most importantly, youth need to be engaged in community co-production efforts to encourage the participation of the non-service-seeking youth. The NPSC shared public safety year-to-date trends as well as data and analyses to facilitate this discussion and be intentional about where and when programming efforts can be more effective at engaging youth and adults. #coproducingsafety #communityengagement

A great discussion organized by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) with panelists from Newark Community Street Team, Newark Department of Public Safety, and Newark Public Safety Collaborative on the importance of co-production of community safety. We discussed how data can inform community programming decisions in co-production efforts and the importance of incorporating lived experiences to identify problems and develop strategies to respond to these problems. It was a fantastic experience to discuss with Newark Opportunity Youth Network students, Mayor Baraka of the City of Newark, and Deputy Mayor Eure, Newark Public Safety Collaborative latest effort to reduce Kia and Hyundai auto thefts. The students were incredibly engaged and motivated to share their lived experiences and brainstorm ideas on how to prevent auto thefts in the City of Newark. They also appreciated the opportunity to share their ideas and be asked what they think about these problems. #communityengagement #youthempowerment #crimeprevention

Expectations for what’s possible with co-produced #PublicSafety in the City of Newark are high, and the #community partners at this week’s Newark Public Safety Collaborative meeting did not disappoint. The January NPSC meeting included a year-in-review and conversations about next steps for community-led multistakeholder collaboration in the new year. Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) analytics #DriveAction for data-informed community engagement #DICE in #NewarkNJ At Wednesday's meeting, consensus formed around ‘risk narratives’ and a call-to-action to include local youth voices in the data interpretation and related responses to disrupt opportunities for violence and property crimes. As Farrakhan Shegog recently said about DICE in #StLouis, “An empowered citizenship enables communities to feel safer because the ones impacted by crime and nuisance activity the most are the leading voices.” To achieve this, focus groups with kids at schools located in Newark’s highest-risk areas will not only provide better context to the data/analytics but also suggest place-based programming and service delivery that's of real interest to them. It was a busy week for the Newark Public Safety Collaborative team with our bimonthly citywide Data-Informed Community Engagement meeting and two neighborhood-specific meetings in Newark’s Vailsburg and Clinton Hill communities. We discussed community-led programs and activities across multiple hyper-local priority areas for violent crime and auto thefts, the implementation of CPTED strategies, and other localized crime prevention activities.
