Obituary of Dr. Lowell Marvin Greenbaum
Dr. Lowell Marvin Greenbaum, age 94, died peacefully from complications of a stroke, in his home overlooking the Savannah River, surrounded by his loving family on April 19.
Lowell was born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 13, 1928 to Benjamin Greenbaum and Belle (Gordon) Greenbaum. He graduated from New York's High School of Music and Art and the City College of New York, where he met his wife Gloria (Rubin) Greenbaum. They were married in 1950. He earned his PhD in Pharmacology at Boston's Tufts University, pursued research at Yale University, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, and Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He crowned his career with his appointment as Chairman of Research at the Medical College of George, later becoming vice-president and a dean. He was recognized, internationally as a leader in kinin research.
After retiring from MCG, Lowell turned his attention to civic contributions. He chaired the Richmond County Democratic Party for 16 years, and was privileged to host Bill Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Stacey Abrams at his home. The Georgia State Democratic party thanked him with a lifetime achievement award from the Democratic Party of Georgia. He was a active member of Rotary and sat on the board of the Augusta Canal Authority. The breadth of his service was recognized in 2022 by Joseph Biden with the President's Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was an avid photographer, astronomer, playwright, lover of opera and classical music, and violinist. His fervent devotion to the Atlanta Braves and Falcons replaced the pain left by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He supported the Augusta Green Jackets.
A resident of Augusta for 44 years, he leaves behind his wife of 73 years, his children Mathew of Harahan, LA, Daniel of Metairie LA, Jessica of Brooklyn, NY, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his beloved cat, Ketzyl.
Services will be held at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez, on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 2:00 PM. The family would appreciate a commemorative gift to a charity of your choice.
