THERE ARE SOME HESITANTS AND GETTING THE SHOT AND I THINK WE’RE TO OVERCOMING THAT BUT SLIGHTLY ORVE 100 PEOPLE SIGNED UP TO GET THEIR SHOT AT THE LEARNING CENTER TUESDAY. 'Our Healthy KC Eastside' has been pushing to vaccinate more people on the eastside.

Kansas City’s east side has some of the lowest COVID-19 vaccinations numbers in our area.But the community group Our Healthy KC Eastside is hoping to bump the area’s vaccinations numbers up. "Painless, you really didn't feel anything," said Cesar Guzman, who received his first dose at the group's vaccination clinic at the W.E.B. Dubois Learning Center. Guzman says he decided to now get his first shot to keep his loved ones safe from the virus. "I was really concerned that I might catch it, so to keep everyone safe in school and my family as well. I came here to take it," Guzman said.He's one of the many people getting their first dose at the vaccination event. "We want people to feel welcomed, we want them to feel like they're in an environment that they know, they trust, they frequent often," said Jannette Berkley-Patton, a professor at UMKC's School of Medicine, and a team member. The Kansas City Health Department reports that in some parts on the east side only 45% of people over 18 years are fully vaccinated."There were some hesitance in getting the shot but I think we're overcoming that," said Natinael Mamo, a UMKC School of Pharmacy student who volunteered to administer shots. But slightly over 100 people signed to get their shot at the Dubois learning center Tuesday.Volunteers and organizers hope others sign up, and take that first step in staying protected from the virus."This a community coming together to try and increase vaccinations on the east side," Berkley-Patton said.Our Healthy KC Eastside's next vaccination event will be tomorrow at Blue Valley Industries at 1608 Prospect Ave. Kansas City, Missouri.It runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
