Quarterback Nick Foles' debut game for the Jaguars didn't last beyond the first quarter in Sunday's season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs at TIAA Bank Field.

Foles suffered a broken left collarbone after getting hit by Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones on a 35-yard touchdown pass to DJ Chark on the Jaguars' second drive of the game during the team's 40-26 loss.

Foles said he will undergo surgery Monday. There is no timetable on his return. He could be out for up to two or three months. Foles suffered a hairline fracture of his left collarbone in 2014 when he was the Philadelphia Eagles' starting quarterback and missed the remainder of the season.

If he goes on the injured reserve list, Foles would not be eligible to return until Week 11 against Indianapolis on Nov. 17 after the Jaguars come off their bye week.

''Same side. Different place on the collarbone,'' Foles said after the game. ''The one in 2014 didn’t need surgery. It was a hairline fracture, so it was a different situation. This was a complete crack. We don't have a time span, but I'm going to do everything I can to get back as quickly as I can to where I'm ready to roll. I knew when I hit the ground something was wrong. I felt it.''

Foles was on the field for 10 plays before he was forced out of the game. On the play, Jones got inside penetration against right guard A.J. Cann to get a direct hit on Foles just as he released the ball on his touchdown throw to Chark.

''I feel bad for him,'' Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said.

After the play, Foles was taken to the locker room for X-rays before he was ruled out after completing 5-of-8 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Backup rookie Gardner Minshew replaced Foles and led the Jaguars on back-to-back drives that ended on field goals of 37 and 25 yards by Josh Lambo. During a stretch in the game, Minshew completed 13 consecutive passes.

Foles returned to the sideline late in the second quarter and walked off the field with the team with his left shoulder in a sling during halftime. The Jaguars did not disclose the extent of Foles' injury beyond that it involved his left shoulder.

Earlier this week, Foles was listed on the team's injury report with a sore abdominal oblique muscle, but he was a full participant for practices.

The Jaguars signed Foles to a four-year, $88 million free-agent contract in March after he emerged over the past two seasons in Philadelphia in place of injured starter Carson Wentz and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory against New England during the 2017 season and then to the divisional round of the playoffs last season.

Rookie linebacker Quincy Williams, who earned his first career start, was forced to leave the game late in the second quarter with a right knee injury. Chiefs top receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a shoulder injury late in the first half and did not return. He was reportedly transported to Baptist Medical Center for evaluation.
