The IGWG organizes regular in-person and virtual events where members from around the world can learn from and connect with each other. These events may be thematic, such as a focus on recent research in the GBV field, or dedicated to capacity strengthening, such as integrating participatory and inclusive evaluation and learning methods in gender transformative global health programming. Our annual IGWG Plenary creates space for members to meet in person and provide feedback on the network as a whole each year.

Presentations and recordings of IGWG events are available online so you can find past events you missed or want to revisit. The presentation materials are also available.

Why: Learn about recent research, programming, approaches, and tools for engaging men and boys in health; network with colleagues working on engaging men and boys across health and development areas around the globe.

As strides in recent years advance the research and programming around engaging men and boys in health, new and recurring challenges and opportunities require that we continue to emphasize men and boys as key actors in promoting gender equality and improving global health outcomes. Key questions for advancing meaningful engagement of men and boys include:

  • What more can we do to engage men and boys as clients of health services for their own health and well-being?
  • How can we engage men as partners and users in gender-synchronized interventions (such as couple-focused programming) while still upholding women’s agency and autonomy? How might the approach vary for men in monogamous and non-monogamous relationships?
  • What does it take to engage men and boys as agents of change in shifting gender-inequitable norms of masculinity and fortifying more equitable norms at the community and societal levels?
  • How have research topics and methodologies evolved to better capture the influence and impact of male engagement programming?
  • What can we do to engage a broader diversity of men and boys (for example, men with gender-inequitable attitudes and beliefs, men who are a sexual or gender minority, men with disabilities)?

Want to know more about the IGWG’s Male Engagement Task Force?

The Male Engagement Task Force (METF) is an information, advocacy, and knowledge exchange network that examines what it means to engage men and boys in health promotion and gender equality. The METF aims to explore why we should engage men and boys, what are the benefits, how to do it, what works and doesn’t work, and what modalities of health services can better reach and include men and boys while addressing gender dynamics that act as barriers to health. Health areas of focus include family planning; sexual and reproductive health; maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; nutrition; HIV/AIDS; and prevention and treatment of infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis. The METF considers relevant social and behavior change, service delivery, research, and policy efforts to improve outcomes across these health areas. For more information, click here.
