Mystery and horror explode around Agent Van during a cave diving exhibition to search for a lost colleague referred to as Agent One. Sci-fi! Horror! Romance! WOW this book has it all! I am a huge sci-fi fan and can usually see plot twists coming from a mile away, but this book kept me guessing until the last page. Seriously, everybody go read this one so I have someone to discuss it with!

Start this one early and prepare to stay up late to finish it, because I couldn’t put it down. But I wasn’t going to be sleeping anyway cause some of the scenes are a major creepfest. I couldn’t get it out of my mind, so a week later I read it again and this is one of those rare books you’ll enjoy even more on the second read.

My favorite character was Doc. He had me in stitches, but all the characters are so unique and interesting, you can’t help but fall in love with all of them.

The edition I read had a chapter from the author’s next book Conjure Lake in it, and I will definitely be picking that one up.

Wow. All I can keep repeating is wow. This book—this story—is such a whirlwind of adventure into the unknown. Rebecca creates characters with a realism unlike any author I’ve ever seen, their quirks and peccadillos make them literally leap off the page and into your memory banks forever.

Then there’s the world-building. I can’t fathom how long this intricate reality took Rebecca to create, but she covers every nuance and describes it with a lyrical lilt that paints the world around you, stroke by stroke.

Finally, the plot. Chills and gasps and heart-bending moments as the arc twists and turns deeper into the questions we never dare ask ourselves about the truth of the world around us.

Read it. You’ll be ever so glad you did.

Must read!

My goodness! After reading this (well after every chapter really) I needed to take a step back and just process. From the very beginning of Hybrid I was shocked and surprised. I really didn’t know where this was going to go or how it would pan out! I found myself really savouring this read, I both couldn’t wait to and at the same time dreaded finishing it.

I had to put the book down after Chapter 3 because it was late and I managed to freak myself out! I then kept all my limbs tucked in tight to sleep just in case.
I needed to rush through chapter 6 to find out what had happened ‘down there’ because I felt like I was going to cry.
I had to pause half way through Chapter 7 and just take a moment to awwwww at the romance.
What I’m trying to say is that if an emotion exists, this book WILL make you feel it!

Hybrid is at first glance one of those typical alien infiltration, government secret type books. But as you read, a complex race, history and society is revealed and with every page you realise exactly how much thought and care the author put into planning every aspect of this book! The plot is fairly fast paced which I enjoyed and it kept you in just the perfect amount of suspense. There was never a moment where I felt like it was too fast and I was infinitely grateful when Agent Vans questions were answered in a direct way with no faff or ‘you shall find out soon’
The protagonist Van, isn’t at all what you expect. I went into this expecting a typical macho CIA agent. But what I got was a complex human I couldn’t put into a box and could yet to relate to nonetheless. Annika was similarly surprising! And my god was her true identity/role a PLOT TWIST and a half or what! I seriously did not see THAT coming. Or the other thing or basically anything onwards of Chapter 10.

But no spoilers if you want to know you have to read!

My whole experience reading this book has been so amazing that I really can’t give it anything less than 5 stars! I loved it and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel. Or bonus content that would be awesome too! 🙌🏽

Author Rebecca Henry always does a beautiful job of weaving together stories of love and romance. In HYBRID, she expertly factors in a vivid, intricately-told science fiction tale involving plenty of action, along with human emotions and otherworldly interactions. Rebecca masterfully creates a frightening underground world with such a descriptive plot, filled with distinctive, beguiling characters and shocking twists and turns. The chemistry between Agent Van and the alluring Annika literally jumps off the pages, and the endearing Doctor Helix (aka Doc Do Good) manages to steal every scene he’s in! If you love getting lost in a great book (and who doesn’t), then HYBRID is a must-read!

Book review!!!
Let me start by saying that I am not really a sci-fi fan, this is a sci-fi book. What I AM, is a huge CIA fan and this book is all about the CIA fighting off aliens trying to destroy humans. There is a little something for everyone in this book. There is the sci-fi angle, the CIA top secret government program angle and there is also a little mini romance as well. If you enjoy a good alien tale, and let me just say that not all aliens are created equal, this book is for you!

Agent Van is assigned a new job in Australia at an underground military surveillance base called Pine Gap. At Pine Gap Van meets a young woman Annika whom he has an instant attraction to. It just happens to be his lucky day as Annika is one of his new partners.

Van and Annika’s first assignment together is to go in a cave to look for Agent One who has not returned. There is more in the cave than Van was ever expecting. In the cave they have to fight alien creatures as they are making their way through the cave looking for the agent.

These aliens have been around for a long time longer than most humans even know. Yeah well most humans don’t even know they exist in the first place. Ever since the invasion humans have been slaves to the aliens helping them to survive.

Hybrid reminds me a lot of the alien invasion movies and Journey to the Center of the Earth and Land of the Lost as Van and Annika’s world is filled with fighting aliens, alien creatures that are animal like as well as prehistoric/alien creatures. I could picture all of this in my head as I was reading Hybrid. I could just see Van, Annika and their team as they were running around fighting the aliens and trying to save the world and just trying to stay alive.

The descriptions were written so well that I could vividly see it in my mind’s eye as if I was right there with them as one of the characters myself. Hybrid is one of those books you would like to see on the big screen. I just loved Van and Annika’s sci-fi world with the aliens and monster animal like creatures.

If you like aliens, science fiction, prehistoric animals, alien invasions then this is one book you are going to love…Hybrid.

I hesitated between four and five stars, until finally going with five. Let me shed light on it.

I enjoyed this read very much. It was a thrilling read, and the action was there almost straight from the start. I never knew what was around the next corner; the direction I expected this book to take was changing all the time as I got deeper into the story. The twists kept surprising me.

I appreciate all the knowledge this book contained, the theories and history of our own Earth. This book had plenty of action, scifi elements and horror. If you are into alien stories, this book is definitely for you.

So why hesitate between four and five stars? I want to stress I really enjoyed reading this book, but it contains elements I am personally not too fond of. "Instant love" is one of my dislikes, but here, I admit, it had a certain history behind it which made it forgivable. Building character personalities was also perhaps a little lost under the action, but I admit I loved Doc and the others as support for Van. The core team worked awesome together, and I had many exciting and terrible moments following their progress through this story.

So, while a certain instant love quality does exist here, and personalities could have had more time to develop, on the whole the action and gripping intrigue was strong, and I found myself accepting things as-is.

I think this was a good read and it kept me entertained.

(A similarly worded review of the book will appear elsewhere too)

The Review

This is every sci-fi readers dream book! A phenomenal read that explores several different aspects of the science fiction genre. From time-travel and the influence of alien species on the development of the human race, to worlds within the Earth’s core and creatures born of scientific experimentation, this is the ultimate sci-fi read.

While the mythology of the alien creatures and the world at large the author created is what initially draws the reader in, it is the emotional and relatable backstory and character development of protagonists Agent Van and Annika that really keep the reader invested. The romance that blooms between the two heroes of this tale helps the romance and sci-fi genres blend beautifully in this novel, and the author does an amazing job of creating a cast of characters both good and bad that elevate Van and Annika’s journey ten-fold.

The Verdict

This is a must read book of 2019. One of the best sci-fi reads of the year, the author has created a rich mythology and sci-fi story that readers will be clamoring for more of. While the story has a satisfying conclusion that readers will love, it also introduces enough story elements to hint at a much larger mythology that awaits discovery. An engaging and evenly paced read, this is one of my 2019 Must Read Sci-Fi novels, and if you haven’t yet you should grab your own copy of “Hybrid” by Rebecca Henry today!

If you like science fiction, aliens (Phylax), monster like creatures (Tlalocs), action, horror and romance, than you will love this book. It has everything and more! The authors builds a whole world underground, a military base called Pine Gap. Agent Van is assigned to the base where he meets Annika and a romance blossoms. You will cheer them on. But there is darkness, with fierce fighting against these terrifying monster aliens. Lots of twists and turns will keep you hooked to the end. I really enjoyed this book!

Agent Van Anderson works on the CIA's Extra-Terrestrial unit. He investigates alien beings that show up in different parts of the world. One day he is taken to a new, top-Secret Base in Australia. Once Agent Van Anderson learns his new task is to investigate an alien race called Species X he is intrigued, but the mission turns out to be much more deadly than he expected. Will Agent Van Anderson and his new team complete their mission and live to tell the tale? Read Hybrid to find out.

This book was a fun, decent read, if you take it for what it is: a book about the CIA trying to protect the Earth from aliens. It actually had a little bit of a Men In Black feel to it. I like how complicated the storyline was, with multiple alien races and a bit of ancient history. The idea of this secret CIA base fighting aliens is also a really net idea.

The book did have a few major flaws. There was not a lot of character development, as we only scratch the surface of their personalities. The characters trusted each other too quickly and a romance developed within minutes of knowing each other. There also a few plot holes and some awkwardly-written paragraphs that could have used more editing.

Over, this was a decent read, and I recommend it if you like if you like books about aliens.
