Sophie's lost in the jungle, and the sun is going down...

Sixth grader Sophie Washington, her good friends, Chloe and Valentina, and her parents and brother, Cole, are in for a week of adventure when her father signs them up for a spring break mission trip to Costa Rica. Her dreams of lazing on the beach under palm trees are squashed quicker than an underfoot banana once they arrive in the rain forest and are put to work, hauling buckets of water, painting and cooking. Near the hut they sleep in, the girls fight off wayward iguanas and howler monkeys, and nightly visits from a surprise “guest” make it hard for them to get much rest after their work is done. Then Sophie and friends take a wrong turn in the jungle and things get even more wild...

Sophie and her family go on a vacation to Costa Rica taking along her friends Chloe and Valentina who share a room with Sophie. They learn lots of new things like the fact it is Fall in Costa Rica but Spring here in America. They also learn about local wildlife, a boa constrictor who's bite cannot kill you but can squeeze you to death is seen on the golf course. Their guide is Carlos. Experiencing local food they get to eat Plantain Chips , a sweet treat. Sophie is attacked by ants blaming it on little brother Cole. Each day a monkey breaks into the girls room and steals their hair barrettes raising general havoc, he even follows them on a hike where they get lost following him. A cute story not my favorite of the series but enjoyable.

I love it as Sophie gets a break from the boys and even though Mariama can't go with them it is still fun. Mr. Washington is a dentist and because a lot of people need help in Costa Rica he helps them. The children work hard carrying buckets and I can't imagine how hot their faces would be. The next day when they have to help in the kitchen the cheerful women thery saw the other day are gone. Greta informs them that they are off helping at another site. They go in the kitchen and meet a bad tempered women. They groan and moan all except for Cole who looks like he is having the time of his life. He has a good time until he gets a fuss from the women. Then her daughter comes along and wants to elarn how to speak American so they speak and laugh. It was much more fun with her . They have a zip line adventure and an alligator adventure until they go home. Just b before they go home their new pen pal sends them a message. They can't wait to reply.

Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica is yet another fabulous addition to Tonya Duncas Ellis’s Sophie Washington series. I recently was introduced to Sophie Washington in earlier books and I have enjoyed every one of them. Mission Costa Rica is probably my new favorite. I love that Sophie’s family and friends chose to go and help others in another country who truly need it. Quite an adventure for them! Sophie is introduced to a new character that has a little problem swiping things that does not belong to them, which kept my giggling at their antics.
I give this book a well deserved five stars and highly recommend it for all readers young and old.
I received this book from the publisher, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Tonya Duncan Ellis details a great fun mission trip to Costa Rica with family and friends in "Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica." The story contains great adventures of zip lining, excursions, boat trips, and a pesky howler monkey. Duncan Ellis also does a wonderful job explaining the moral obligation of helping of those in unfortunate circumstances and face poverty. I recommend this story to everyone especially children in the 9 years to 12 years old age range.

Sophie Washington Mission: Costa Rica was such a great chapter book to read! The story is about a girl named Sophie Washington and her adventure in Costa Rica! She is accompanoined by her Father and friends, Chloe and Valentina. They are quickly put to work by painting, cooking and hauling buckets. Although this place was so much more then she envisioned she becomes to grow love for the place!

This was the first book of the series that I read and I am excited to read the others and build a collection. The writing style was enjoyable to follow. I greatly appreciated the character descriptions so early on because that allowed me to imagine this setting so much more. I immediately caught myself indulged in the tropical atmosphere which is so different from Northern California, where I reside. I loved how the cultural differences allowed the characters to adjust to Costa Rica’s cultural norms of service and family.

Overall this book is great for young readers who are interested in adventure and other cultures. Also, a great book to highlight hard work and service to others.

Something special about this book is that it was gifted to me for Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019!
I truly believe the best way to bring inclusion to every child and school is by incorporating multicultural books and giving children a peek into different cultures. This will allow children countries away from Costa Rica to envision this place, smell weather.

My daughters and I enjoyed this book. It was told from the persepective of Sophie in first person, as well as in the present tense. That was interesting because most stories I read are presented in the past tense. We all thought the monkey part was pretty hilarious. The book gives a glimpse of what people do on mission trips and shows kids how good it can be to help others. I do wish there would have been a little bit more discussion about how good the kids felt about giving back to others and how it's good to go on mission trips, but it was just a story told by Sophie, so I understand why it wasn't included in the book. It would have been a nice touch though in case readers would be interested in missions trips. It could help kids open up discussions with their parents about helping others and going on missions trips, so for that reason I really liked this book. After all, teens identify most with other kids their age, so if a teen were reading this, I'm sure they'd like the book. My two daughters are perfect candidates to read this book, and we enjoyed reading it aloud together.
I found this book on a free download day and I am happy to voluntarily share my review.

I received this book from Tonya Duncan Ellis and Multicultural Book Day for an honest review.
This book was fun. The adventure Sophie Washington had with her friends and her family in Costa Rica is realistic. Readers of middle grade humorous books will like the parts about the animals in
Costa Rica. Sophie wishes she was able to go to an amusement park, but she learns much from visiting another country and helping out the people there. Friendship, adventure, learning about another culture are all introduced to Sophie and her loyal readers. I think you will enjoy Ellis's other Sophie Washington books.

Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica is an educational adventure book for children, grades 4-6, written by Tonya Duncan Ellis. Sophie and her little brother were thrilled to learn that they would be going to Costa Rica with their mom and dad for spring break. Her dad had volunteered to be part of their church’s efforts to get badly needed medical and dental care to the residents of that country. Sophie’s dad was a dentist, so he’d be doing fillings and providing other necessary dental care. Her parents had also decided to allow Sophie to invite her friends, Chloe and Valentina, to go there with them. Sophie had also invited Mariama; however, she and her family already had plans to go to Disney World during their break. Costa Rica was both exciting and scary. Sophie didn’t like the snakes that she saw slithering around, even if they were friendly, and the monkey who seemed to enjoy visiting Sophie and her friends’ cabin at night was making them lose sleep. Sophie was stunned, however, to see the lines of people waiting to see her dad, and saddened to hear they were suffering for weeks or more without access to dental care. And while she’d rather be lounging every day on the beach instead of doing volunteer work for the mission, when all is said and done, she was very glad to have been a part of this mission.

Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica exposes Sophie, her friends and the reader to a world far removed from the Texas neighborhood she lives in and the school she attends. Her week in Costa Rica is both an adventure and an educational experience as Sophie learns about another culture and sees how her dad’s and her own volunteer work can make a big difference in people’s lives. I loved watching the kids struggle with painting that fence and seeing how their efforts meant so much to the elderly woman who lived there. Ellis also shares the rich ecology and natural history of Costa Rica which Sophie experiences on the jeep tours, zip lines, and, for one scary night, out alone with the jungle. I’ve enjoyed every one of the Sophie Washington books, and this one is no exception. Seeing her grow as a result of this rather different spring break vacation is inspiring indeed. Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica is most highly recommended.

Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica is a book apparently aimed at children aged 7-13 - and is certainly written in language appropriate for this age group. The story itself is fun and engaging, and the characters are surprisingly well-developed for a book of this size and style. Being a part of a series is beneficial in this regard, as this has given the author time and space in which to develop individual personalities - an aspect of the book that will engage young readers. I would recommend the series as a whole for this! However, this book can also be easily enjoyed apart from those that come before it.

The only concern I have with this book is that it occasionally strays into ambiguous territory in terms of its 'mission statement'. Learning about helping others and the value of selflessness is a vital lesson to children at this age, and is portrayed well in this book. However, it does so at the risk of belittling the lives of native Costa Ricans at times. For example, one character remarks that because they do not have running water, they are still 'in the Dark Ages' - a phrase and concept that can seriously alienate foreign cultures and generalise them in terms of poverty as being somehow 'behind' more wealthy areas.

Overall, however, the message of the book is a positive one, portrayed in a way that will appeal to children as exotic, entertaining, and occasionally quite funny.

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand it is a delightful story for middle grade girls. It has everything going for it in a children's book. However as an adult, I am thinking of how likely it would be that someone would allow their 11 year old to go to a foreign country without them, especially when one doesn't appear to be a U.S. Citizen. The activities seemed a bit extreme when traveling with other people's children. Also, I have friends in Costa Rica, and plenty who have visited there. When I read that the seasons are flipped from the USA I was stunned I didn't know that because I thought the equator was much further south. I asked Siri about it, and the seasons are THE SAME as in the USA as Costa Rica is in the Northern Hemisphere. I did a little research, and yes, sunset is two hours earlier than in Houston, but the season doesn't cause it.

Fun book for children, but does have things that make adults think, "They did that with someone else's child?" Maybe it's the area I live in and maybe this is common in other areas, but just amazed me.

Vacation adventures

Another home run that is filled with lessons for middle grade readers. When Sophie's dad agrees to go to Costa Rica to provide free dental services for a week, he brings along his family and two of Sophie's friends. They learn how people live in a different part of the world and spend part of their week being of service in the village where Mr. Washington is providing dental care.

While they moan and groan about their duties they are also learning about the value of helping others. How many 5/6th graders you know could benefit from this example? Also, there is much detail about Costa Rica imagery and animals, you could travel there and never leave your bedroom. A great formula for the imagination of young readers. I've said it before, but it bears repeating, Ms. Tonya Duncan Ellis has struck gold with her Sophie Washington book series. I'm enthusiastically into the next one.

Excellent story!

This series is adorable. I read the last book Hurricane and enjoyed it. I also enjoyed this one too! The writing about Costa Rica was so vivid I thought! Between the descriptions about the wild animals and the food and everything else I felt like I was there. I really like the main character Sophie as well as her friends. They represent real girls to me that a young reader can relate to and each showed different personalities and interests. I also appreciated the message of helping others that was in the book. I think helping others without complaining and with appreciation is such a wonderful lesson to teach kids. Laslty, the drawings were expressive and showcased the scenes perfectly. Not too many but just enough to convey the story. I highly recommend this book and the series and can't wait to read more!

In this sixth book of the Sophie Washington series, Sophie's family heads to Costa Rica for Spring Break. While Sophie's father offers his services as a dentist in a free clinic, Sophie, her brother, and two of her friends spend their days doing jobs for the clinic's mission organization. They make friends with a local girl their own age, encounter a monkey who develops a liking for hair accessories, and find plenty of time to swim, explore, and have adventures. In Mission Costa Rica, Sophie and her friends are pushed out of their comfort zone: working hard serving other people, adapting to a new, foreign environment, and doing things that feel scary -- like zip-lining across the jungle. The author has done a good job of creating characters that feel genuine and relateable. It's light-hearted, contemporary story perfect for kids in the 2nd-4th grade.

This was my first Sophie Washington book, and I’m eager to read more. I’d describe Sophie as an down to earth girl who’s about as real as one can be. The author does an excellent job of pulling you into the story, and building suspense along the way.
I particularly liked that Sophie and her friends got along so we’ll, and the realistic way she and her brother got along.
I have friends that have lived in Costa Rica, and know dentists that have done exactly what Sophie’s dad did, and all was accurate. I felt like I was listening to a family’s recount of their trip.
There’s a lot of adventure in this book, and I admit that three of those adventures had me flipping pages faster than a kid reading by flashlight underneath the covers.
I’ll recommend this book to my grandchildren and any others that like a well written children’s adventure story

I love these books. Very interesting, educational, and fun. The characters are realistic, ones middle schoolers can identify with. Very good. I highly recommend this and all the books in this series to young kids.

Sophie’s father is a dentist, and he has volunteered his time to go to Costa Rica on a mission trip to treat the people of that country with dental problems. Sophie is allowed to take two friends with her. They encounter an annoying monkey in their sleeping quarters. What will happen when the family takes time for fun, including zip lining?? Will Sophie try or succumb to her fears? What happens on a river cruise when Sophie’s brother Cole gets too close to a hungry crocodile? What other adventures will they encounter before they return home?? Read to learn and to be entertained.

A trip to Costa Rica! But it wasn’t as fun as Sophie was expecting with getting attacked by the red-fire ants and finding a howler monkey in her hut. However, working at the mission proved that Costa Rica may not be so bad after all with its lush vegetation, fresh foods, exotic animals, and artsy crafts. Of course, working in the hot sun to bring aid to the people was…work. But Sophie and her friends try to make the best of it. Then things take a scary turn when the girls find themselves lost in the jungle. Oh no!

A fun, adventurous read!

I think this is my favorite Sophie Washington book.
As with the others, it's well written, the pictures are nice, and it can be used to teach your kids helpful life lessons without shoving it in their faces.
I just felt that this one was a lot funnier than the other ones were; the others have been more of things that everyone can relate to, for the most part - things like competitions at school, competitions with siblings, and to an extent, natural disasters. But, this one was more fun because it's other things - vacations to foreign places, helping others out, and doing things like zip lining aren't things that everyone gets to do. So I really liked this one for that.
Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

This book was well written and the characters were well rounded and believable. Sophie fights with her brother whines about the chores but at the end of the day, she takes pride in the family's accomplishments. When Sophie Dad is asked by his church to go on a mission to Costa Rica, he decides to make it a working vacation for the family and allows Sophie to invite her friends. What kind of adventures will they have?

Okay

I thoroughly enjoy reading these type of children books, for they always teach my children an important life lesson in a simple and easy way that they can understand. It's important for children today to have morals, and the only way that they will obtain them is if they are taught from a young age.

This isn't my favorite Sophie Washington stories. The story is still part of a good series and it provides a generally good message. There were parts of the storyline that made me feel it was unrealistic.
